Neither one thing nor the other
Bob Cunis died at his home in Northland on Friday. He was 67.
Although Cunis's finest hour in a Test career spanning 20 matches came as a
batsman at Dacca in 1969/70, he was principally a medium fast bowler. There
were many stories about him recounted on radio in New Zealand over the
weekend; for example his habit of leaving the button undone on his shirt
cuff so that he could pretend to be reaching over to do it up when in
reality he was taking the opportunity to rub the ball in coconut oil smeared
on his forearm, or the way he would insist on using his own ball at net
practices, it having been sandpapered rough on one side.
However there will always be one story about Cunis which sticks out the
most: despite being widely misattributed in the media to John Arlott, it is
of course the infamous Alan Gibson comment: "Cunis - a funny sort of name -
neither one thing nor the other".
