James Anderson: 99 Test wickets
James Anderson is set to become the 42nd English bowler to take 100
Test wickets. He is currently on 99, at an average of 34.97.

If he gets to 100, I believe he will be the second most expensive
English seamer to reach the mark, after Devon Malcolm, whose first 100
wickets cost about 36.

Two spinners, Doug Wright and Ashley Giles, have the highest average
overall on reaching 100 (40 and 39, respectively), Devon Malcolm is
next, then Tufnell and Anderson.*

Andersons stats for 2008 are: 37 wickets at 27.89. This is mainly
thanks to some good matches v. New Zealand; in the current South
Africa series he averages 38.20.

RtH

* Note: it is hard to get an exact average for the 100th wicket, so I
looked at a player’s average for the match in which they reached 100
and the one before it, and rounded the averages to the nearest
integer. And I may have forgotten someone.

He's bowled better than 38.20 though I think. Perhaps with more
consistent support from the other end, and more luck he could have done
better.

and more importantly without the stupid attempt to remodel his action
to prevent back problems which ended up with several catastophicly bad
performaces right up until he broke his back.

Agreed, but if you can't bowl accurately and hit the seam regularly
then you're meat and drink when it stops swinging. And he is sadly. Same
problem as in OZ. When the ball doesn't swing we're stuffed as we get
little or no movement from the seam whereas McGrath and Clark did. Why
is that?

Malcolm's final Test average of over 37 is the highest by any genuine
fast bowler taking 100 or more Test wickets in the whole history of Test
cricket. RH
