Cricket Quiz July 2008 - answers
1. E M Grace outraged the cricketing world in the 1860s by introducing a
new shot. What was it?

.
2. Ranji was noted for one shot in particular - he may even have
invented it . What was the shot?
A. The leg glance, that is the glance played with a deliberate turn of
the bat.
3. CJC Rowe of Kent (1970s) bowled in three different styles in FC
cricket. Name them.
A. LBG, ROB and Left arm wrist spin.
4. In the 1870s a new bowling tactic was developed which was thought to
be leading to the death of cricket because of its negative effect on the
game - the Gloucester SLA bowler R F Miles was a prime exponent. What
was the tactic?
A. Off_theory - bowling wide of the off stump.
5. Fred Spofforth is credited with being the first great exponent of
what bowling innovation?
A. Disguised change of pace.
6. The early Australian Test player Harry Boyle is credited with
inventing what fielding position?
A. Short leg.
7. What was bodyline bowling officially known as before it became
known as bodyline?
A. Fast leg theory - something called leg theory had existed before with
notable exponents such as Fred Root, but that was simply a tactic of
bowling at the legs to0 a packed leg-side field.
8. Richie Benaud invented a new delivery. What was it?
A. The flipper. Richie described this as ball coming in form the off - a
variation of the googly which skidded through rather than bouncing
excessively - but in recent years it seems to have been used to describe
a variation on the top spinner.
9.E Achong was responsible for the naming of a form of bowling. What was
that form?
A. Of Chinese extraction, he gave his name to the Chinaman, a ball,
depending on your view, either equivalent to the right arm bowler's
leg break or to his googly. It was used to describe the left arm wrist
spinners equivalent ball to the leg break during Achong's time and I
think that is the correct usage.
10. When the restriction on leg side fielders was introduced in the
1950s, what did opponents of the change argue?
A. they argued that it was a negative measure which would diminish the
attacking qualities of off-spinners and inswing bowlers, especially the
former without giving any proportionate balancing advantage to those
moving the ball away from the bat.
