Cricket quiz June 2008 - answers   
1 Panesar reached 100 Test wickets during the Manchester Test. Name the 
other  left arm spinners who have also done so for England.

A. Peel, Briggs, Blythe, Rhodes, Verity, Lock, Wardle, Underwood, 
Edmonds, Tufnell, Giles.

2. During the 1894/5 Ashes series England won a remarkable  Test by 10 
runs having been forced to follow on (the first instance of a side 
winning a Test after following on).  Two left arm spinners bowled 
England to victory in the Australian second innings. Name them.

A. Peel and Briggs.

3. Three left arm spinners have taken 15 wickets in a Test for England. 
Name them.

A. Sorry, that should be four not three. Briggs (SA) Rhodes (v A), 
Blythe (v SA), Verity.

4. Which left arm spinner (all countries) has taken a 100 or more Test 
wickets at the lowest average?

A. Robert Peel, 102 at  16.81.

5. Which  left arm spinner who has taken 1,000 or more FC wickets has 
the lowest career average?

a. Peate , 1076 @ 13.48.  Verity comes second with 1956 @14.87, a 
fantastic record considering his career was entirely in the high scoring 
1930s including four series against Bradman.

6.  Who was the last English left arm spinner apart from Underwood to 
take  FC 100 wickets in an English season?

A.. Norman Gifford in 1983.

  7. Which left arm spinner once hit the stumps with five consecutive 
balls in a a county championship match?

A. Charlie Parker for Glouces v  Yorks 1922.. It was his benefit match. 
The third ball was called a no ball.

8. Which left arm spinner with more than 1,000 wickets has scored the 
most centuries?

A.  Frank Woolley with 145. Rhodes comes second with 58.

9. Which left arm spinner was the first to do the double in an English 
season?

A.   Peel  in 1896.

10. Which left arm spinner was the first to do the Test double?

A. Rhodes.

The question is ambiguous as far as second place is concerned. Sobers (86 
centuries) was a left-arm spinner with more than 1000 wickets, but fewer 
than 1000 were taken with spin.

Hence, he does not qualify. Most of his wickets were taken bowling LFM.
