not entirely sure, but, in reality, its not like he really left in the
first place... Apparently he's been helping the team over the past
couple of months in an unofficial capacity.

One thing that bothers me, however, is the cheers from "Red Sox
Nation" at his return, as they think everything will now be OK for 06,
whereas I'm not convinced. If is able to make a difference then all
the better...

Agreed! A fair bit of upset has already been created and is beyond
salvaging. Would Theo have let JD leave for the Evil Empire?!?!
Still he reversed 86 years of woe - a few months "absence" should be a
piffling matter!!!

I'm almost certain he would have, yes. Damon is going to be horribly
overpaid at the end of that contract.

Its not so much that the team for next year is beyond salvage, as I do
like some of the deals, but its the nations thoughts that the team can
only do well with Theo in the hotseat.

I'm not too bothered about the loss of Damon, although it would be
easier to handle if he hadn't turned to the dark side.
I liked the beckett trade as I really honestly (as a Marlins fan as
well as Red Sox fan) think Lowell and Beckett can, and will, do great
things for the Sox. Not only that, but I like the look of the likely
Coco Crisp trade. I'm also glad they got rid of Rentaria, lets face it
he was pretty poor last year, and am confident with the rumours that
they could be signing Alex Gonzalez (the ex-marlin shortstop version)
as shortstop. I hope they can pull it off, as I think Gonzalez will be
a good addition to the team.

My only questions are

1: Can we get rid of Wells and get something good out of the trade.
2: Can we complete the Coco Crisp trade.
3: Assuming we do sign Gonzalez, our middle infield is pretty crowded
with Gonzalez at Short, Loretta at 2nd and Alex Cora and Tony
Graffanino as infield backups. There can't be room on the 25 man
roster for both, given the rest of the infield is Lowell, Youkilis and
Snow.

If the trades and deals go ahead, it would give the following position
players in the 25 man roster.

OF: Ramirez, Crisp, Nixon, Stern
IF: Lowell, Gonzalez, Loretta, Youkilis, Snow, Cora, Graffanino
C: Varitek, Flaherty
DH: Ortiz
That leaves us with 11 pitching slots and potentially 1 reserve
outfielder short, unless one of the infielders can also cover in the
outfield.

Perhaps. But in the meantime he provides a significant upgrade for the
Yanks with both glove and bat. If he's value for three of the four
years it's a good deal. The best bit about the deal, of course, is from
whence Mr Damon came.

Re: Theo back at Boston.
Renteria was actually better than Gonzalez at least, with the stick at
least, according to baseball reference:

I'm not sold on Lowell either. He was horrific last year. Maybe Fenway
can help take some of the sting out of that bu he was 91 points below a
league average OPS+. Ouch.

Crisp is a nice pickup though. Just having a peruse of him I noticed he
only started 10 games in CF last year and the other 138 in LF.
Presumably people have seen enough of him to assume he can play a solid
CF?

I see what you mean. There seemed to be a lot of teeth gnashing and hair
pulled out when it was originally announced he was leaving. A bit too much I
thought!

I didn't see a need to get rid Orlando Cabrera TBH. I liked him and seem to
recall that him and Edgar were on pretty similar contracts although I could
be wrong!!
Anyone else heard the rumours of the return of Theo kick starting a new
chapter in the A-Rod saga?!?!
