A little unfair?
Is it a little unfair to criticise a lack of British athletes in the
Men's 200m final? I think the men's sprints is the best case of the
Commonwealth being world class - I always remember how 12 out the 16
Atlanta Olympics 100m semi-finalists were from the Commonwealth. The
other thing is that Britain's strong events change over time. 25 years
ago we ruled in men's middle distance, and our 100m/200m sprinting
strength was only just becoming established.
So, it's great to see some young and eager new athletes coming through.
I hope this is an early sign of the 2012 Olympics inspiring a new
generation. And I'm pleased to hear Gordon Brown's funding announcement
- I hope it gets spent sensibly, and recognises the role of our existing
structures - including the athletic clubs - in attracting and developing
talent in the sport.
