Sir Fred Goodwin buys a route back from exile

Ex-boss of RBS may finally understand the value of remorse, writes Louise
Armitstead

FOR centuries the empty stretches of rural France have offered a lonely
refuge to enemies of the British people. The words "banished to France",
immortalised by Shakespeare, have been pronounced down the ages on failed
usurpers, unwanted consorts and disgraced aristocrats.

Today that most anachronistic of sentences is being served by the most
modern of Britain's enemies: Sir Fred Goodwin. The former boss of Royal Bank
of Scotland, who was once not just the pinnacle of Scottish society but of
global banking too, has fled to a remote fold of southern France where he is
in hiding with his family.

Sir Fred has not been seen in public for three months following revelations
that he would receive a £17m pension pot despite presiding over the collapse
of Britain's third biggest bank. Anger at the size of the reward snowballed
with his refusal to reduce it: Sir Fred became the embodiment of the
financial crisis. Weeks of fury boiled over in March when vandals bombarded
his Edinburgh home and bullies attacked his children in school, forcing the
former banker into exile.[...]
