THE pressure on Commons Speaker Michael Martin to stand down in disgrace...
THE pressure on Commons Speaker Michael Martin to stand down.... in
disgrace... as he is the one who is confused who should be investigated in
this scandal...

....................

Even his own party wants him out as clamour grows for the Speaker's head

Speaker Michael Martin has faced a barrage of complaints from politicians
from all parties over his 'inappropriate' remarks to Kate Hoey, while a
secret ballot of MPs found 85 per cent want him to quit.

THE pressure on Commons Speaker Michael Martin to stand down has intensified
after government ministers joined the call for him to quit. Several are
reported to have telephoned Downing Street to criticise his public remarks
to MPs over the Commons' handling of the expenses row.

It came as a secret ballot of MPs - including frontbenchers from across the
political divide - showed 85 per cent want Mr Martin to stand down from his
prestigious post, according to Politics Home.

But Mr. Martin confronted his critics, signalling that he was not going to
leave without a fight yesterday in a ferocious exchange with a senior
backbencher.

Cameron: pay it back or you face the sack
Tory leader imposes draconian new rules on his party in bid to defuse
expenses scandal

David Cameron moved swiftly to prevent the MPs' expenses scandal derailing
his project to modernise the Conservative Party by forcing Tory
frontbenchers to pay back tens of thousands of pounds they should not have
claimed.

Re: THE pressure on Commons Speaker Michael Martin to stand down in disgrace...
The Big Question: What is the Speaker's role, and does Michael Martin
deserve such criticism?
Why are we asking this now?

Michael Martin could be first Speaker of the House of Commons since the
reign of William of Orange to be sacked by MPs. A Tory MP, Douglas Carswell,
is getting help from the clerks in compiling a motion of no confidence in
the Speaker, which could just possibly bring Martin's career to a premature
end. It is also becoming clear that neither Gordon Brown, David Cameron, nor
Nick Clegg is likely to ride to his rescue.
