Would you feel better if he had went to school with a dozen or so
Molotov cocktails?  The death toll could easily have been higher by
using any number of ordinary items rather than a gun.  I can make
mustard gas, napalm and thermite bombs in my garage.  If someone is
that strongly motivated to kill, so much so he is prepared to die
doing it, he will find a way.
