Arrest made in Syracuse party shooting; teen dies
  January 9, 2009

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ A Rochester man has been charged in a shooting at an
underage drinking party that injured four people, including a teenager who later
died.

David Acevedo-Mateo, 26, was charged with second-degree murder and attempted
murder. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment Friday in Syracuse City Court and
was ordered held without bail.

"The process is just beginning," said defense lawyer Michael Vavonese. "We'll be
taking a good look at why they're making these allegations."

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday.

Police said the shooting occurred early Sunday morning at party attended by
between 60 and 100 people, most of them minors.

One of the victims _ 15-year-old Jamar Rolfe of Syracuse _ was shot in the head
and died Thursday at University Hospital, resulting in the murder charge.
Acevedo-Mateo was charged with attempted murder for the shooting of Carlos
Rivera, 16, who was in fair condition Friday at University Hospital.

Another teen shot in the head, 16-year-old Ismaeliz Pizzaro-Quinones, remained
in critical condition. The fourth victim was a 32-year-old man who was shot in
the leg.

Acevedo-Mateo was arrested by Syracuse Police and U.S. Marshals outside a
Rochester apartment complex Thursday afternoon, Syracuse Police Chief Gary
Miguel said at a news conference Friday.

"This was over drug sales and competition in drug sales with Mr. Rolfe," Miguel
said.

Police are uncertain if Acevedo-Mateo was the only shooter, he said.

Rolfe had a loaded .380-caliber handgun in his pocket when he was shot, said the
police chief.

""This was over drug sales and competition in drug sales with Mr. Rolfe,"
Miguel said."

How lovely. Maybe we should legalize drugs, huh? It would certainly cut
the murder rate; after all, when was the last time you saw liquor
distributors shooting it out? Can you say, "Prohibition"?
