Driver with 37 guns detained at LA airport
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES
A motorist with 30 handguns, seven rifles and fully loaded ammunition magazines
in his pickup truck was arrested Friday at a vehicle checkpoint as he entered
Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.
The weapons and ammunition were in a container in the back of the man's truck,
which was stopped by Airport Police officers at Century and Sepulveda
boulevards, a major entrance to the passenger terminals area, said airport
spokeswoman Nancy Castles.
The man, who did not have any gun on his person, was arrested for investigation
of weapons transportation violations, Castles said. The man's name was not
immediately released.
The scene was observed by a KCAL-TV news helicopter overhead.
The FBI, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and
Los Angeles Police Department "are currently trying to determine what the
registration of those weapons are, the manner in which they were carried and if
there were any violations at this time," Airport Police official Jim Holcomb
told the station.
Holcomb said there was no indication the man was out to do any harm at the
airport and was apparently there to pick up someone. "That's being investigated
right now," Holcomb said.
Airport Police routinely set up vehicle checkpoints at roads leading into the
airport's central ring roads.

Well in that area, since he wasn't a cop, he must be a
criminal....and no it doesn't make sense to me either, but there you have
it, .......maybe followup on that too, but there are so many gun related
incidents being liberated from the press.....some are quite funny.....

So, in actual fact, there's no evidence that any crime has been committed
here.
So what's your point in posting it?

Seems to me, that (for all you know) he's a legitimate individual who
happens to own some firearms on his way to the airport to pick up some mates
who are going on a hunting trip.

Ask the op Jones. He searches everywhere for junk to post on firearms.
He is crazy.
He never post anything about crimes with knives, rocks, bats, bare
hands, nor about crimes that were prevented by persons with firearms.
He is a typical British subject, even if he doesn't live there.
I bet he doesn't go out of his house without an armed escort.

In my state, a CCW is a CCW. No limit on what guns or how many it
covers. Some states require that you can only carry what you qualify
with...is yours one of those?

There were actually 16 guns not 37. Of those 10 were handguns not 30. He
was going to a target shooting range not going hunting.
"The weapons which included 10 handguns, five rifles and an antique
black-powder musket were in containers in the back of the 47-year-old
man's truck that was stopped by airport police at Century and Sepulveda
boulevards, a major entrance to the passenger terminals area, said
airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles.
Two of the weapons, a revolver and the musket, were loaded, Holcomb said.
Dominguez's wife, Sue Dominguez, told The Associated Press that her
husband planned to go target shooting at an outdoor range with a friend
who he was picking up at the airport. She said she found out about his
arrest from a television news report and they later spoke on the phone.
She described him as a law-abiding citizen who treats his weapons with
care.
"The guns are always double-locked. He has all the paperwork and
everything. He's a fanatic about making it all legal," she said. "He
didn't lie to the police and he said they were polite and respectful to
him."
Police initially reported that 37 weapons were found in the truck.
Castles said that count was an estimate based on the number of containers
in the truck, which did not all contain weapons.

You are the one shooting from the hip. You can transport unloaded guns into
an airport, and even check them as baggage. You can transport guns in a
vehicle in CA, unloaded and locked in a container or in the trunk. You can
transport "assault weapons" in CA. There is no limit on the amount of ammo
you can transport or own in CA. While guns must be obtained by prevailing
law, there is no requirement to register the ones you have.
In short, the guy was stopped and raised law enforcement attention. If he
was legally transporting unloaded guns, he's getting a bum rap.

It still doesn't matter.
The only think illegal here is the search and arrest.
You do know that you can carry a weapon into an airport and check it in
as baggage, right? Why would they care about anything outside a
restricted area?

I hate to admit it:
I live in Canada, were ATCs are usually some employment based
issue, others like a general ccw/ccp are not given to the common
peoples....
Hell we even have to pass those strict gun tests to purchase guns
and ammo, then more tests at the ranges (what's left of them here since
they closed 13 of them in the last 10 years)
Then we have to get an ATT (Authorization To Transport) for carry
to and from the Ranges...but if you buy a gun you need an additional ATN
(Authorization to pickup Number), which is ALL getting to be a very a bit
much on the paper assed bullshit realm.
Yeah I have all that and renew every 5 years....if someone fails to
renew ALL that, the Gestappes can come and grab ALL your property, even if
they are delinquent in issuing the Papers....

Sounds quite comparative to Canada, the only difference is the
handgun fear in Canada, whereas a $30 .303 Lee Enfield capable of
committing all kinds of (beyond capture) sniper activities is not
considered dangerous by Canadian Gun Laws.
I really don't see how handgun crimes are not solved right there
with all the witnesses and immediate noise at the scene..???

You got me there,...........also, these spot checks are so numerous
and uncovering a legal gun is such a rush to the police/media, it get's a
lot of attention with a lot disproportionate reportage.

Who says he's *staying* in LA?
Like I said, he might have been meeting friends at the airport and taking
them elsewhere.
Big deal if he had loaded magazines IN THE BACK of his truck. A magazine is
just a device for storing ammunition.
The point here is, I don't know what his actual intentions were, and neither
do you.

Looks like the guy didn't do anything illegal, unless there are some
"creative" charges. Bottom line is that LAPD is trying to do their job and
have decided to bend the law in the process.

I agree, it becomes a media frenzy and when it is all over, and the cops
admit that there was nothing illegal about the guns or where they were,
it doesn't make the news. You'll be lucky if it is on page 6 of the
paper in the local news section. Being found innocent isn't news
worthy, unless it is about something a cop did. Then it needs to be
front page news so the riot can begin.
