Talking of long memories: Labour take Old Sarum shock ! Result of the
Wiltshire unitary authority election in the Laverstock, Ford and Old
Sarum division:
Lab 652
Con 409
UKIP 180
Lib Dem 121
Turnout 49.6
One of only two Lab seats on the new authority (both essentially
suburban bits of Salisbury, Swindon being a unitary on its own these
days).
Who holds Dunwich and Ilchester ?

Re: Clay Cross
1972, I think it was, when 11 Labour councillors refused to implement the
Rent Act and increase council house rents by £1. They also awarded a pay
rise to council workers. Ultimately they were disbarred from office and
fined.
My point was merely that in the 2009 elections, this (in)famous socialist
redoubt almost fell to the enemy.

Yes, and the Clay Cross UDC leader at the time was David Skinner IIRC,
the brother of the Bolsover "Beast".

Re: Clay Cross
Dennis Skinner was also a Clay Cross councillor, up until 1970 I think.
