This is my neck of the woods and a great result for us LibDems. The
ward has long been a Tory stronghold. We managed to get one well-known
local campaigner elected in the 3-member ward, but could never quite
manage to get the second and third councillors, and the seat reverted
to all Tory after our councillor passed away IIRC.
The ward remained all Tory at the last local election and the Tories
did OK in the London Assembly/Mayoral elections, so to win now on a 9%
swing is most welcome. The Camden Conservatives are doing atrociously
lately. Despite the party riding high in the national polls, they've
lost this seat and lost a Camden by-election (Highgate ward) earlier
this year to the Greens. There are going to be recriminations in the
local party!
Meanwhile, there is another Camden by-election forthcoming in Kentish
Town. Historically Labour, it's been LibDem recently, but our
councillor resigned after mildly embarrassing circumstances. (He went
to the US to do a PhD and this fact was outed by the local paper
before he'd worked out what he was doing.) The Tories are nowhere in
the ward. I can't see Labour re-taking giving the national context.
The Greens have campaigned hard several times before in the ward, but
never taken it. That said, they're coming off their Highgate win. Will
be interesting to see what happens.
