Bitter because we cannot live in such enlightened areas of the world as Yurp
and Oz and enjoy a truly high standard of living as well as spending our
drab and uninspired lives among the shining lights of mankind.

I see another huge bank just went bust over there.
The decline of the US gathers more momentum every day.
Try not to be bitter - you had a good run for your IOUs.

Merrill Lynch, An investment firm and a biggy.
I believe it was bought out by Bank Of America.
However, Lehman Brothers is available if the Bank of Queensland wants to
take the plunge.
BTW, it is an international consortium attempting to put Humpty Dumpy back
together.
They, unlike some stooges I know, realize the threat is the world economy,
not just to Knuckle Dragger Haven.

No - I was reffering to Lehman Brothers - though at the time of posting I
think it was still 'technically' afloat.
I think Merril Lynch will sell for about 50 bill (if they're bloody lucky)
the Bank of America rather than the Bank of Queensland.
Half what they were nominally 'worth' a year ago.

Economy's still booming here in OZ I'm sorry to have to tell you.
Unemployment dropped *again* this month. Tens of thousands of new jobs
created.
House prices still rising in all but a few suburbs down south.
Massive trade surpluses. *Huge* new capital investment in industry.
This area is the boomiest in the whole continent too. Aren't I 'lucky'?
'Yes' I reply.
Shameless really considering the US is in terminal decline.

My next tip for you. If you have any shares in Morgan Stanley get rid of
them bloody quick.
You know I'm always right on these things. And usually about a year ahead of
the so-called 'experts' too.
Don't say I'm not good to you.

I thought AIG was next up.
Anyway, Oz is going down as well.
The Asian market is also teetering.
And if China catches cold, Oz ....etc.

I've attempted to explain to you many times the interconnectivity of the
world economies.
Oz is not an island into itself.
(Well, actually in a sense it is)
A lot of paper out there is backed by these crap sub-prime loans.
Because of that a lot of businesses and countries are going down.
And here is the saddest part of all.
No one has learned a bloody thing from it.
The current sub-prime lending problems were flashing warning signals years
ago.
First Union was shot in the ass about ten years back by injudicious
sub-prime lending.
Others followed suit.
Didn't matter.
Greed ran rampant.
And here we are once again staring calamity in the face.

And I've tried to explain to you many times that we hardly deal with your
part of the world. Why would we? I even gave you the exact figures. But of
course you choose to continue to believe what you want to believe.
Of course it will have *some* effect - but Australia is probably THE best
placed western country in the world to weather the storm.

Not here they aren't.
The figures are available and in fact the remarkably low degree of exposure
has been often commented upon of late.
Westpac have less than 10million exposure for example.
The Federal government apparetnly have $500 million in AIG but it's hardly
going to break the bank - especially considering the surpluses 'we' are
building up.

It's all that imaginary money again. You'll need to print lots of 'real'
money and hope inflation takes care of it. : )
For the next few years that is.
The only thing that will really sort things out long term is if you stop
living beyond your means on borrowed money and start to pay it back. It's
only about $60,000 for each man woman and child in the US after all. It's
not impossible. It would only take about 30 years I've read.

Hey, it worked for the French.
They inflated themselves out of a mell of a hess after the Franco-Prussian
war.
