Notes:-

2008: Davis sought re-election in order to obtain a vote of
confidence from his constituents as an opponent of proposals
to allow police to detain those suspected of terrorist offences
for up to 42 days, and as part of a more general campaign to
oppose restrictions on civil liberties. The Liberal Democrats,

        his stance and endorsed him.

title she held at the time of the election. She was sponsored

support of the use of Closed Circuit Television and a database
of DNA samples, both of which Davis had criticized.

Nicholson advocated reform of methods for learning mathematics.

spending, sought election as a candidate committed to economy
        in the public sector.

Pinder was the candidate of the 'New Party', which he had formed.

Howitt sought election as a 'Freedom 4 Choice' candidate. He
was a public house landlord who had been prosecuted for
allowing tobacco smoking in his premises, and was opposed to
the prohibition on smoking in public places.

Astley was opposed to the extension of testing in schools.

Bishop was the candidate of the 'Church of the Militant Elvis'
        Party which he had formed.

Wood sought election in order to campaign for better care for
        injured service personnel.

Darwood was inspired to contest the election by his religious

I guess this is probably the first time the Greens have come 2nd in a
parliamentary election, albeit against only one of the three main
parties.

I thought I saw the BBC flash "recount". It wouldn't have been for the
winner or for lost deposits. Was it for second or for last place?
Neither seems a good reason.

I have my answer at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7498330.stm

Apparently this was to check second place. Not needed in my view.

I believe that's only the second occasion when there has been a
recount for second place (?) where neither candidate had a chance of
winning or saving their deposit, the only previous occasion I know of
was North Down 1995.

The Greens are making a big thing of it, although in the circumstances
(best known anti-Tory competitor going into the election) it seems a
fairly poor result. And I think they've done better %-wise.

I was surprised the BNP didn't contest it.

Still, all those lovely £500 deposits will go a long way towards paying
for the election.

There was a recount for the same reason in Bootle in May 1990 (Con
3,220 LD 3,179).
I assume that there have probably been various other examples.

I find it odd and illogical that you wrote

> GARRETT, Miss Gemma Dawn      Miss Great Britain Party               521

> PINDER, David Nigel           The New Party                          135

but then you wrote

>                         D.N. Pinder             Ind      135*  0.6

>                         R. Carroll              Ind       29*  0.1

as if to imply that somehow their parties are not registered or in
some other way not real or legitimate.

And then you wrote

>         Pinder was the candidate of the 'New Party', which he had formed.

although Mr Pinder is not mentioned in the original reports of the
formation of the New Party (previously "People's Alliance") in 2003.
The main f(o)unding members were Howard Hodgson and Robert Durwood.
