That's a very good increase in the share of the vote for the 
Conservative candidate as well, broadly in line with the rest of the 
night's results and boding well for the Parliamentary constituencies 
in the area.

That must be a misprint.  The previous result (2006) was
Lab 397 Con 386 UKIP 148 LibDem 140

The outgoing BNP councillor was disqualified for non-attendance and
was the landlord of a pub which got lots of bad publicity for disorder
and kerfuffles.
