Popular initiative for a single health insurance scheme
The popular initiative for a single health insurance scheme launched by
the left and the greens proposes that the compulsory health insurance
contributions currently paid to a range of private companies should
instead be put into a single system, and that the amount each person
pays should depend on their level of income. The initiative committee
believes such a measure would help to spread health costs more
efficiently, and would benefit people on low incomes. The initiative was
rejected by parliament in June 2006, but will be put to a popular vote
on March 11th 2007
