Celebrity chef faces court fight in 'hare hunt' row

A PRIVATE prosecution against celebrity chef Clarissa Dickson Wright
and racehorse trainer Sir Mark Prescott started yesterday with a
pledge from an international animal welfare charity that it would be
continued even if Crown lawyers refuse to take over the case.
Neither accused attended yesterday's hearing where each faced four
charges two of hunting hares with dogs and attending a hare coursing
event at Nunnington on March 2 this year, and two similar alleged
offences at Amotherby, near Malton, on March 3.
But Dickson Wright pleaded not guilty by letter and Stephen Welford,
representing Prescott, entered a similar plea on behalf of his client
at Scarborough Magistrates' Court.
John Weatherall, representing the International Fund for Animal
Welfare which is bringing the case, told the court: "The Fund
investigated this matter and passed it to the Crown Prosecution
Service and police.
"The CPS requested a number of people be charged with offences related
to this particular incident. A pre-trial review has been scheduled for
November 19."
Regarding Dickson Wright and Prescott, the charity had began a private
prosecution because "the police investigation was delayed", Mr
Weatherall added.
"A number of potential offenders were not spoken to and the Fund was
satisfied they had enough evidence against these two particular
defendants to obtain a conviction," he said.
"Since then they have been in contact with the CPS. It may be the CPS
will decide to take these two defendants on so all the defendants are
treated by the same body." But they might not be prepared to do that -
in which case he Fund would continue with the private prosecution, he
said. The court agreed that in any event it would be sensible to list
the private and public prosecutions together.
The proceedings were adjourned until November 19 to coincide with the
case management hearing into the CPS prosecution of five other
defendants including Yorkshire's former champion racehorse trainer
Peter Easterby.
Easterby, 78, has already appeared in court charged under his birth
name of Miles Henry Easterby, of Habton Grange Farm, Great Habton. He
is accused of permitting land to be used for hare coursing and
attending hare coursing.
Elizabeth Dixon, 44, of Appleton-le-Street, near Malton, is charged
with knowingly facilitating a hare coursing event, while John Shaw,
54, of Welburn Manor, Welburn, near Kirkbymoorside, faces an
allegation of permitting land to be used for hare coursing
Andrew Lund-Watkinson, 56, of Pine View Lodge, Newton-on-Rawcliffe,
and Jacqueline Teal, 42, of Scarborough Road, Norton, are accused of
attending a hare coursing event.
The charges relate to an alleged hare coursing event at Easterby's
farm at Great Habton, North Yorkshire, in March this year. Prescott,
59, is a Newmarket-based trainer who has groomed more than 1,200
winners since 1970.
Dickson Wright, 60, who lives in the village of Inveresk in East
Lothian, is a former barrister who found fame as one half of the
former Two Fat Ladies celebrity chef team.

Re: Muslims better at slaughtering animals to extinction with machine guns for no reason other than 'fun'.
I see a real need for PETA to start a Islamo-chapter to protect those
camels, goats and donkeys from sexual abuse.
