Turkey: Lawmakers To Draw Up List Of French And European "'Massacres'
AKI - "Turkey: Lawmakers To Draw Up List Of French And European
"'Massacres'":
ANKARA / 24 October 2006
The Turkish parliament is to draw up a "shame list" of massacres allegedly
carried out by European nations in response to a French bill which makes it
a criminal offence to deny that the early 20th century massacre of Armenians
under the Ottomans was genocide. According to a report by the Cihan
newsagency, France, Germany and the Netherlands are among the countries to
appear on the list, being compiled by the Turkish parliament's justice
sub-committee as part of debates over a bill that would recognise what it
says is genocide committed by France against Algerians.
The bill is expected to be debated once parliament reconvenes on Thursday
following the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The sub-commitee decided that compiling a list of atrocities allegedly
committed by several European countries would be the most effective way to
respond to the approval of the Armenian genocide bill earlier this month by
France's lower house of parliament.
The French parliament's upper house Senate still had to approve the bill for
it to become law.
