gosh, it's way too late for me to follow this but I'll take a guess at
it being your preoccupation with immersion heaters? no need to
apologise old chap, I can talk for hours about the problems with fan

Yes, I hate the problem with fan ovens and jacket potatoes - they make 
them so delicious they're irresistible.

H'mmmm. I'm having a major problem at the moment trying understand what, 
logically, is the opposite of nothing. The answer doesn't seem to be 
constant but variable, so one 'opposite of nothing' can be larger or 
smaller than another 'opposite of nothing'.

(At this point I'm quite happy for a real mathematician to dive in and 
explain how other real mathematicians have encountered and solved this 
conundrum).

There is no conundrum at all.  All you've got is semantic confusion.  If
you were to try to express the problem mathematically, you would see
that there is no problem at all.
