I have the joint pains and pathologic outbursts of laughter, but the
headaches and trembling pretty much went away a few months after I
stopped drinking.

Have you ever done the nervous giggle at something totally inappropriate?

I used to work for a non-profit agency that helped people move from
shelters and/or the welfare system into good paying jobs and homes of
their own. Nearly all who worked there had altruistic motives and a
genuine desire to help others in need.

Understand, it's not that I didn't care about those less fortunate than
myself but, for me, it was just another job. I performed my job well,
but it was about getting a paycheck - not helping poor people.

One of the managers was openly gay, and one day he questioned my seeming
lack of empathy for one of our clients. I said to him, "When are you
going to realize that I'm not like you people?" Then I immediately
corrected my statement by saying, "I mean you social worker type people,
not..." And that's when I lost my wits.

The manager said something to the effect of, "Well, what else could you
have meant? What other *type* of people would you be referring to?"

That's when I started giggling uncontrollably for a couple of minutes,
and I wasn't even capable of responding to him. I was *utterly*
embarrassed and completely lost my wits. I wasn't embarrassed about
feeling 'guilty' or for saying anything ugly; I was embarrassed about -
I'm not sure why. Because of my ignorance? Because I liked him? I don't
really know.

That's my most memorable example, but I've also giggled/felt giddy at
funerals and weddings. But it doesn't happen very often. My wife's aunt
giggles constantly; every time she speaks she giggles. I think she's
nuts. I'm not *that* bad.
