And yet there was a display of Aurora Borealis seen in Orkney last night
and they only usually occur around the time of high sunspot activity.

It seems we can get aurorae without sun spots when there is a "coronal
hole" (whatever that is) as is now occuring.

There's more at

That was an interesting article, thanks both Mikes :-) wonder if we should
club together and send Splodge up north , well it would be cheaper than a
cruise :-)

No sign of any down here though :-( I still live in hope of another show
like the one a few years ago. Particularly now that I've got better access
to a place with no street light pollution. You will still let me know won't
you ? I've got friends on permanent standby :-)

Interesting. I've never heard of steam devils before. Must be quite an eerie
sight.

Oh yes I will indeed, but it's been some years since we've had any decent
displays down here, as we are still in a sunspot minimum.

we were wondering if we'd seen a 'pale' display the other night when we were
in embo, would have been weds or thurs i think. Rob is into astronomy so we
looked sywards after dark most nights. this night the sky was very dark but
there were many instances of light blue-ish clouds, or at least thats what
they resembled but there were no clouds, am i making sense? lol

Could have *maybe* been noctilucent clouds, which are very high clouds
(like 50 miles high!) which are illuminated by the sun after sunset because
they are so high.
