Warning to potential Investors (I lost 25k in 6 months)
I'm a 54 year old semi retired guy from Lancashire England, with some
savings for my retirement. I was tempted by the forex markets, but too
scared to trade myself, so I was tempted when I was offered an
opportunity to invest with a Professional trading company based in the
City of London. (Beta2 Ltd) They were very slick and very persuasive,
and appeared extremely professional...
I invested 50k in March 2009, and by September they had lost 5k of my
money, and charged me 20K in commission to do it, leaving me 25k
down......
I'm depressed, angry, and feel like a fool..
I'd be very interested to know if anyone else has had similar
experiences with this company.
I have a little webpage at http://www.beta2.info with all the details

You're a pratt as well. 5-8% per month when base rate is 0.5%, there's one

£20K in commission???
Weren't you made aware of their grossly absurd charges?
Try writing to the financial sections of some newspapers as they have
people who may be able to advise/help you better.

Never heard it before.
Since my bleeding brain it very much applies to me.

I'd like to think that's what I was doing. Apart from offering to
take the rest of his money of course. But I can't as I'm not normally
online at the weekends. Just popped in to wish Pingu all the best.
BTW, anyone else willing to help with my project is most welcome.

As Pam says, it was only GOM and not women :-)
IMHO if somebody who had posted to this group before had posted that the
replies would have been in a different vein but it's not the first time an
unknown person has posted something along similar lines but had no intention
of returning. I'm sorry if the replies weren't as friendly as our usual ones
and it was good that you came back. Now why not return again and I'm sure we
will want to hear the outcome.

I agree... and I'd like to know if they are rogues that need to be
named and shamed, that's why I suggested writing to Tony Hetherington
at The Mail on Sunday.
I know nothing about forex markets but if these firms are governed by a
regulatory authority and are doing something wrong then he'll find out
and advise Andy.
£20K in commission doesn't sound ethical.

Ok, I'll accept that maybe I did burst into your little group and spout
a little bit... but it was sincere...!!!! and now I've ascertained you
are really a friendly bunch, I might just hang around...:-)
What I do know is that Beta 2 trade a little over 7 million pounds each
month through these managed accounts... So I'm not the only one to be
tempted..
Plus... they aren't a tin pot internet company, or some dodgy back
street trader... they are FSA registered and have massive offices in
the square mile near the Old Bailey and the Bank of England.
Anyway, nice to meet you all...:-)

It's something I say a lot to Rob, last best example was after I'd been
feeling ill and he asked me how I was , I replied "about as good as I look"
to which he said in a heartbeat "you can't feel that bad."
What he meant was I look fine so I must feel fine, but that really wasn't
how it came across, I still giggle at the memory of his face when I
explained why i'd just thumped him :)

Good thing Ray doesn't thump me at some of the things that come out of my

Yep. I lost just over GBP3000 to a fraudster last year. No-one to
complain to because fraud is now virtually decriminalised by the latest
fraud act to massage the crime figures. I did report the entire sad
episode to a trading standards office who have never replied. I just
have to put a brave face on the loss.

Dear Sirs,
Re: Independent Quotation Services Ltd
Last year I had the misfortune to get involved with the above company,
IOS, that claimed to specialise in the project management of all aspects
of conservatory construction: obtaining quotations from suppliers,
drawing up and submitting plans to our local planning authority and
generally supervising construction.
I had a stroke (CVA) in late 2005 that disabled me and left me feeling
that I couldnât cope with the stress and problems of getting planning
permission with Waverley Borough Council in this part of Surrey which is
designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. I wanted a
conservatory erected at my above address so I contacted them in July
2008 and spoke to:
Shaun Worsfold
Independent Quotation Services
82a High Street
Cosham
PORTSMOUTH
Hants PO6 3AJ
I was assured that IOS Ltd would look after everything, that it
wouldnât cost me a penny because IOS worked on a commission basis. On
the strength of this conversation, particularly the assurance from IOS
that they would deal with everything including the necessary planning
consent application, I asked IOS to go ahead.
This resulted in three visits by IOS (Gary Webb). During the first visit
we decided on a conventional double hipped pavilion design with a
Pilkington K glass roof.
IOS produced three buildersâ estimates during their second visit on in
early August and we decided to accept the estimate of £13,000 from:
Tony Ashworth
ASA Building Services
94 Farlington Avenue
Drayton
PORTSMOUTH
PO6 1ES
For IOSâs third visit they wanted a cheque for £3350 as a 25 percent
deposit plus planning application costs âto start the ball rollingâ
plus an initial stage payment to enable ASA Building Services to order a
conservatory. I handed over a cheque for that amount dated 20 August
2007 which was drawn on our account. When I asked for a receipt, Gary
Webb of IOS gave a gesture of annoyance, said that heâd forgotten his
receipt blanks and that heâd âpop one in the post tomorrow.â
The only popping that IOS did was to their bank that day was to present
our cheque in double quick time. Once IOS had our £3350 we never heard
a whisper from them again. Emails, phone calls and letters to them went
unanswered.
At the beginning of February 2009 Tony Ashworth of ASA Building Services
came to see us with the bad news that Independent Quotation Services has
gone into liquidation. He had only just learned of this when he applied
to them for the money to order our planned conservatory.
The news was a terrible blow. The whole idea of using IOS had been to
save us aggravation. Instead the whole business had become a nightmare.
Eventually we decided to write-off the theft rather than lose our
planned conservatory. We paid ASA Building Services £5000 so that they
could start work on ordering the conservatory. It duly delivered and
construction was completed in April 2009. Instead of costing us
£13,000, thanks to Independent Quotation Services, it cost us nearly
£17,000.
During all that time Independent Quotation Services have maintained
their website at and are still sniffing around likely punters for funds:
www.iqs-conservatories.co.uk
Same pictures, same contact address. It seemed that Independent
Quotation Services are still trading.
Yours sincerely,
James Follett

I fully realise I have been a fool.. and I thank you all for reinforcing
this in such and eloquent manner...:-)
However my purpose for posting was not to moan about how stupid I had
been, but simply to try to help others avoid getting into a similar
position.
Beta 2 Ltd are actively advertising and their acquisitions people are on
an advertising drive, specifically targeting 'medium worth' retired
people..
Hence my posting on this particular newsgroup
From what people who have contacted me from my website have told me
Beta2 ltd are so keen on gaining new investors they have been offering
trading accounts with a minimum investment of 5k, and they sell VERY
hard...
Fortunately I am in a position where I CAN continue to work for another
year or so to recoup my losses, but I am sure there are many of you out
there, who simply could not recoup these kind of losses.
Interestingly my similar post on many of the investment, and stocks and
shared newsgroups and forums has been met with a very different response
to the one I received from this newsgroup, the readers on those groups
were very quick to say thanks for the information..!
Maybe the rumour about grumpy old men is true..<lol>

Or older and wiser maybe?
At least you came back. Many who get the sort of replies you have
don't return.
Now, about the rest of you money. Can I interest you in a new venture
I'm planning? Wire netting oil cans etc. No. Ah well at least I
tried. <bg>

You notice it wasn't the old women who replied?
I reckon the old women have done the same as me - put that knowledge where
it goes so if we happened to have 5K to spare we wouldn't put it there!
Trouble is, 5K is a lot of money to us silversurfers so us females (the
sensible sex!) aren't likely to get in that kind of mess.
Pleased you have the ability to resume earning a penny or two. You'd be in a
right mess if you hadn't!
Thanks for the warning, Andy, you never know, someone might be tempted. If
this knowledge was spread around more maybe the firm wouldn't manage to get
any customers ;-)

I'm sorry to hear of your losss but, despite what you say on your
webpage you weren't simply investing - you were gambling. Would you
have put placed £50,000 on horse racing or at the blackjack table. I'm
not a gambler but I know that one of the basic rules is that you should
never, ever gamble more than you are able, and willing, to lose.
Another rule is that if you gamble and lose you just have to grin and
bear it.
Recently, I was talking to a gentleman who is currently working for a
small local business (locksmith). He took early retirement at sixty,
moved to Spain and set up his own business. The business failed and he
lost everything so he's back in this country and back in full-time
employment trying to get some money together for his second try at
retirement. He's seventy-three. Perhaps you should follow his example.

Never heard of them. Sorry you had such a bad experience, that's a huge
amount of cash to lose. I am also not sure about whether your website may
cost you more. Though I understand your reasons for making the site, they
have already objected ad if it were me I would be asking for legal advice in
case they can sue. ( I am not having a go but do think it would be sensible
to check it out, no point in chucking good money after bad and principles
wont pay your bills)
This sort of thing is outside my experience, but I (and I suppose you, to
some extent) am aware that any investment can go down as well as up,
especially in the current financial climate. I was amazed at the £20k
commission though, I did glance at their website and they are regulated by
the FSA. No mention on your site of any contact with them. Did the FSA
make any comments on the level of commission?

That was my point too Boo as they have to make you aware of their
charges beforehand. He definitely needs to contact the FSA if he has
not done so or someone who may know more about these schemes such as
finance journalists.
