Homer
Story about a very smart dog- anyone remember who wrote it? I was telling
someone about it a while back, and I realised that I couldn't remember the
author.

No- it's called "Homer", IIRC. And at least 45 years earlier. When I was a
kid, I had a dog called Homer on the strength of that story (who lived up
to his name by being too clever by half- if you tied him up, he used to
unpick the knots and run off).

No- I don't remember who it's by, but it's called "Homer". And it's a
short, not a full novel.

Possibly "Homer's Secret" (also published as "The Secret of Homer") by
Alexander Poleshcuk, 1968, or "Homer and the Herring" by Berkeley
Livingston, Fantastic 1944.

From ISFDB, which has five other less likely possibilities.

None of them look convincing. Damn. I'm pretty sure the story was just
called "Homer", but it's a *long* time ago I read it. I wonder if my Dad
will remember...

None of them look convincing. Damn. I'm pretty sure the story was just
called "Homer", but it's a *long* time ago I read it. I wonder if my Dad
