Gothr -- UK goth map
Hello,

I recently expanded the "Temporary Goth Events Listing" site I've been
working on[1], to make it more permanent and provide an interactive map.

The map graphic will look suspiciously familiar to anyone who spent a
lot of time on netgoth.org.uk. ;o) Mr Pete (who created the very
original UK net.goth map on darkwave.org.uk, and who used to post here
as -=Falcon=-) kindly allowed me to reuse it.

Each region of the map can be associated with upcoming events, club
nights, nightclubs, pubs, shops and "others places". If you create a
login you can add a profile of yourself to the map too.

(User logins are required if you want to update details on the map, but
not if you just want to look at it. The "events tracker" part of the
site doesn't force you to log in to add contents, but may do in future.)

Unfortunately, although I was able to salvage the map graphic (with it's
old school 1990s feel!), there isn't any of the old netgoth.org.uk data
on the site. :o( So... that's where I need your help! Please take a
look and add your local pub, favourite shop or goth night!

The site can be found here:

  * New URL: http://www.gothr.org/
  * Map section: http://www.gothr.org/map

(If it's not obvious from the new URL, I plan on renaming the site
"Gothr". It was the best name I could come up with. ;o)

Thanks,

Dave

Way ahead of you ;-)

I hope it takes off. IMO it has the most potential as a replacement for
Netgoth that I've seen yet.

Heh. I saw you added Invocation at the start of the month. Thanks for
getting the ball rolling.

Cheers. Now I need to finish rebranding it, create some web banners and
actually promote it properly!

Any plans to add a mailing list thingy? That's considerably more use than
something one goes and checks...

As in a weekly or monthly mail of upcoming events, extracted from the
database? Not immediately, but that sounds perfectly doable. TBH the
more the site gets used the more time I'll try to find to enhance it.
Other things it presently lacks:

  * Syndication (Atom feeds)
  * A comments feature for each item on the map
  * A "mark me as going to this event" feature
  * Etc.

Thanks,

Dave

Quite. That's the most useful thing a site like this can do...

YMMV there, I think. I'd much rather check a website then receive a regular
email, because:

- An email can never be more up to date than checking the site, and may miss
events submitted at short notice, last-minute cancellations etc.
- If one is visiting a different city, it's good to be able to check for
events there. To include all events nationwide in a regular email would
require the email to be quite sizeable, and one would have to scroll through
to find the location of interest.
- I wouldn't want to have to hunt back through my inbox, set up a special
one just for event mailouts, or save the email away somewhere when it
arrives, when I could simply check a bookmarked web page.

Either way, this should be a useful resource if it gets the support from
promoters etc.
Since UPG seems pretty dead in the water these days, I suggest that plugging
it on LiveJournal communities such as uk_goth_music and uk_goffs_events may
be worthwhile. I submitted Invocation details a while back, and did consider
adding other London events I know of, though I'd rather leave that to the
promoters of those events.

If you don't mind a suggestion, it might be good to add the weekday into the
"Date" column.

Is it possible to edit an event once it's been posted? I want to add some
events but I don't have all the details yet.

It is. When you pull an event up there's a little blue 'edit' link at
the bottom.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I had just enough time last night between getting in from work, slurping
noodles and zipping off to a goth night[1] to create a quick web banner
and post about it on LiveJournal. I think another 15 or so users have
signed up on the back of LJ, and the 'places' section
<http://www.gothr.org/places> has gone from no entries to 27. So I
guess it pays to advertise.

Well, since I'm on a roll, another *really* trivial one - it might be nice
to allow some sort of separator (such as an underscore) in user names
 - e.g.dave_exile rather than daveexile. I think that could just make
some names slightly easier to read.

A reasonable request... I've tweaked the site accordingly. Would you
like me to change your username to "dave_exile"?

Cheers

Right, that should be done. Wish I could've made it to WGT; I've only
ever made it to one, mostly I'm just too disorganised or too poor.
Instead I spent the weekend in work. One of my friends dropped
everything at the last minute and shot out there, and I've just been
looking at his photos on Facebook... most of which seem to be of the
guitarist from Jesus on Extasy for some reason...

Do listings expire after a set time (eg 6 months)? You don't
want dead events hanging around looking live because noone's
bothered to de-list them.

Blimey, I go away for a few weeks and don't bother to renew my
newsreader thingy, thinking UPG was dead and then this happens. '

That'll teach me... Nice one!

The events drop off the site after they've occured. The URLs remain
active though -- so it's still possible to pull up for example
http://www.gothr.org/events/10 even though it's an event from Monday,
19th of November 2007. I think of it as a historical record, hopefully
no-one will turn up to a long-gone event, especially as it lists the day
of the week next to the date.
