Flat tyre on Scooter
1st time to have a flat tyre. I have a Mercury M48 and no mention of
how to change the tyres etc in manual. The inner tube is a 4.00-5 and
so far local delaer quotes me £9.00 for an inner. Anywhere cheaper
please and also do we need to take the wheel off to change the tyre.
I'm hoping it hasn't damaged the tyre as that was hefty quote.

Not round here. Wouldn't have a new tube & only one garage left in
this village. No petrol either so nearest garage put his prces up to
£118.99 a litre. Berwick still £106.99
We have got the wheel off now and removed the offending piece of
hawthorn from the cut and slash hedge program the council carries out.

I regularly fix punctures on my father's scooter - we have lots of
hawthorn and blackthorn hedges round here!
If it is a split-rim wheel, you just need to undo the bolts to get it
apart, take out the inner tube and take off the casing. Sometimes the
casing is very tight on the rim, but it can be gradually eased off
with the help of a little washing-up liquid to lubricate it. I have
used a screwdriver to lever one off a tiny bit at a time, but do be
careful not to score the inside of the rim or damage the tyre casing.
Do not assume that the thorn you pulled out is the only one - I have
often found two or more. You need to check by carefully running
fingertips over the inside of the casing to find them. Also look
carefully over every millimetre of outside of the tread - there may be
thorns stuck in the surface which will work their way through to cause
another puncture (a local mobility firm did not do this on the only
occasion I got them to fix a puncture..). You are likely to need
pliers to pull them out - if you do not get all of it, it may be
necessary to push through the remaining bit to the inside to remove
it.
The puncture in the inner tube can be fixed with an ordinary cycle
puncture kit - again, do not assume that the puncture you found is the
only one (I was caught out by this - only once!). It is worth pumping
up the inner tube (not too hard) and leaving it overnight to check
your repairs have done the trick. Dad gets punctures so often that we
have found it easiest to have a spare inner tube to hand, put that in,
then fix the punctured one at leisure (which is then kept as the
spare). £5.00 for an inner tube is pretty good in my experience we
paid more than that last year.

Re: Flat tyre on Scooter
Thanks. Hubby has now got the puncture fixed we think so maybe I will
try it a short distance later just in case and if the wretched rain
stops.

£118.99 for a litre of petrol. Are you sure you don't mean 118.9p per
litre? Anyway I got an inside tube from my local halfords and it was a lot
less that £9 as I recall(although that was for an electric wheelchair).
Since you obviously have internet access try searching google for the
manufacturer of your scooter and drop them an email and they should be able
to help you.
