Automated nuisance calls
I am getting well and truly fed up with receiving what are apparently
automated calls from abroad. So far I've had 8 today. I'm concerned
that they might continue throughout the night, waking us up, Yet I
don't like the idea of leaving the phone off-hook in case there's an
urgent call.

The 'nuisance call' BT operator I spoke to says there's nothing they
can do to stop international calls. Is that really true? If so, that's
a disgrace IMO. How high-tech or high-cost can it be to detect and
stop such calls?

Does anyone else suffer these? And is there really NOTHING I can do
about it please?

No it isn't. They allow them because they make money from carrying the
calls, so are facilitating a criminal offence. Similar to the way mobile
companies refuse to block reverse charge text messages, all because they
make money.

Tell BT you will cancel your contract, then wait about 20mins for a call
back. They will soon do what they should be for you.

BT don't give a toss. This might interest you, it is the only solution I am
aware of:

I thought that looked too good to be true, and it is.
VirginMedia have been promising caller ID for years but it still isn't available.

Re: Automated nuisance calls
Do the calls have a number associated with them, if no, then you could get
bt to not allow your phone to accept calls with no number displayed, if yes
and its the same number, then this could be barred. However, if like
spammers, they keep changing the number you basically have the same problem
as with email, how do you decide its an unwanted call?
If you bar numbers with no number display of course, some friends who
disable their numbers will have to enable it to call you.

Telephone preference service will cut quite a few of them off.
Even if you've registered in the past do it again.

We were having an excessive amount and I had taken to being unkind to
them. Someone had suggested rickrolling them.

The OP is trouble by international calls - TPS has no effect on these.

Unless it can handle caller ID withheld or caller ID constantly changing
(both of which are common with international computer-dialled random calls)
then it will be useless if ever it does become available.

Re: Automated nuisance calls
It does not work on the internationals, and these automated, Hi, have you
ever been to Florida type calls are a menace as they hang onto the line like
grim death when you try to clear them down.

I had a long chat with someone in Virgin at the time telewest about this and
it seems a lot come from places like Belize and other small countries who
very seldom police telecoms outfits.

Re: Automated nuisance calls
There used to be a device in them old days, which someone showed me.
Basically, it replied to all calls with an automated voice which said. Press
1 twice to connect.
Unfortunately, many people thought they had rung the wrong number and put
the phone down.

Pity, cos the idea in ittself is good as a recording cannot press 1 twice!

Nor on recorded messages, nor on silent calls. The TPS is also a
voluntary scheme and they will do nothing about abuses.

They would need to dial 1470, this would
disable/untoggle for that one call call only.
