CAREY BELL
b. Carey Bell Harrington, 14 November 1936, Macon, Mississippi, USA.
d. May 6, 2007
"Raucous and exuberant in the great Chicago tradition ... tender
introspection, emotional complexity, and the kind of sensitivity and tonal
control a lot of us thought had died with Big Walter Horton."-- LIVING BLUES
" Old school skills with thoroughly modern punch is one way to describe
blues harp legend Carey Bell. While Bell's harp work packs all the heat of
Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II, he's also a sharp tunesmith and
band leader who stands as one of the few players still willing and able to
bring the sound of classic Chicago blues alive and screaming into the 21st
Century." - CHICAGO TRIBUNE
"Bell has set the mark for the harp kings to beat. Stunningly great,
haunting." -- ASSOCIATED PRESS
- Harmonica legend Carey Bell was one of the very few players who
didn't learn his craft by listening to old records, but by studying directly
under the masters. Big Walter Horton, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson
II are among his teachers. A veteran of both Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon's
bands as well as a searing solo artist with chops to burn, Bell's classic
yet contemporary, funky yet subtle and deeply soulful blues place him firmly
on the short list of blues harmonica superstars.
