OT Parking in Central London
Hi -

Hoping to head down into London later in the week to catch some music. I'm
just wondering on driving in and parking up rather than getting the train in.

Is there any reasonably priced parking nearish the Soho area? Or is this a
fool's errand?

Hi.

Depends what you mean by reasonable :-)
By normal values of "reasonable" : No chance
By Lunnon values of reasonable : Possibly

> Or is this a fool's errand?

Almost certainly.

Drive to a tube/train station on the outskirts, then catch the tube/train
into central London

I used to do that quite frequently from south Wales along the M4.
Drive to Chiswick, park up in a side street for free and catch the tube in.

Depending on which direction you are coming from (ideally West or North)
this might suit.

You can park all day near Hayes and Harlington overground station for £2.
Its an 8 minute walk to the station from the car park and then 20 mins on
the train into Paddington or you could change onto the tube at Ealing
Broadway.

No, in a word.

Depends which direction you're coming from, but when I go up the smoke
I always park at Osterley (cheap, right at the station, just off the
M4) or Cockfosters (also cheap, just off the M25) and get the tube in.

Parking anywhere near Soho will cost you anything up to £15 -20 for a
decent night out and you'll spend at least an hour in traffic (each
way) for the privilege of avoiding ths hooded masses on the tube - not
worth it.

*sigh* I remember when you could park in Leicester Square.....and I'm not
THAT old.
I realise this is useless information, but I thought I'd share.

Between '95 and '98 I used to drive often from Reading. Saturday evening it
was easy to get to the very centre and park somewhere. I remember it was
easy, but I rarely went there before 9pm. Saturday mornings I'd avoid... I
wasted many hours on the North Circular... but I would drive to Ealing, park
for free on teh street, and take teh tube.

Is it a lot worse now, then?

Nah, it's about the same. There's still free parking on Waterloo
Bridge after 1.00PM on Saturdays IIRC. Shepherd's Bush still has a
pretty cheap municipal car park on the green - very near the Tube.

How does £NIL sound?

Not necessarily. As long as the "Congestion" Tax boundary is crossed after
18:00, there is quite a bit of free parking available within reasonable
walking distance of St Giles and Charing Cross Road (mainly from 19:00
onward). The squares of the Inns of Court (between The Strand and High
Holborn) spring to mind - about a kilometre from St Giles Circus - but Gower
Street (which is nearer still) is also a source of free parking after 19:00.

See map at: <http://tinyurl.com/yz9nb3j>

You can check LB Camden waiting restrictions and times at:
<http://tinyurl.com/yfqbtdl>

The streets marked in green are free of restriction after 19:00.

I can remember parking in Wardour Street, right outside Pan Musical
Instruments (above the Whisky-a-Go-Go), *and* right outside Sound City in
Shaftesbury Ave (admittedly on a Sunday).

That's better than Hebden Bridge. There's no free parking in the centre even
on Sundays until after 18:00. There are a few 1-2 hour free spots but most
is P&D.
