Acoustic simulators...
'Morning all,

Anyone tried a Boss AC2 or 3 pedal? Pondering this as a potentially useful
effect for adding occasional acoustic-sounding rhythm (and why not lead,
while we're at it) parts when using the Strat or Tele - a Boss demo clip on
YouToob sounds promising...

I tried the AC-2 and didn't like it much.
I tried the Behringer one and it was better, but not by much. I bought that
one because I once had a Behringer X V-Amp pedal thingy and its acoustic
simulation was better than any I'd tried before (Boss, on the Johnson
J-Station, and others), but the new pedal didn't sound to me like I
remembered it.

Then I got a Variax 300. I could get some really cool sounds out of it.

Then I heard a Parker P38 (+piezo bridge) through my V-Amp Pro. That could
sound in some ways better, more easily, than the Variax.

But if it's pedals you're after. I ended up with a cheap Zoom G2 multiFX,
and it has some really good sounds. Among them, the acoustic simulator is
pretty decent I think. I definitely like it a lot better than the Boss AC-2
(never tried the AC-3, but the Zoom works for me, and you get lots of other
things too... a good overdrive (Boss OD-1) simulation, it's also a tuner,
octaver...).

I can confirm that the acoustic patch (A9) on the Zoom G2 ain't bad at all.
It's a tad bassy but not really a problem..
Very effective when playing rhythm on a Strat.
(The other patch I use a lot is the "funky phase" one, which lumps together
phaser,.flanger and auto-wah. It actually sounds much better than you might
imagine!)

Its A2 acoustic brother is a nice bit of kit too; it can make your cheapo
acoustic sound (a bit) like a Gibbo J200 or a Martin, etc., depending on the
simulation patch used.
Plus all the expected effects of course.

AC-2 works for me, although it always sounded best when run through an
acoustic amp! (in my case a Marshall ASR-50) Very useful having the
split output to do this with. Interestingly enough I've started
running my acoustic (Ayers dreadnought) through the clean channel of
my amp and tweaking the EQ via the on-guitar controls. It warms it up
and sounds very full and clean. I'm now thinking of putting a piezo
bridge in the Les Paul to save having to carry another guitar!

Another voice in the chorus for the AC-2 here. I like mine. It works
particularly nicely with my Epiphone Dot.

A useful rule of thumb is 10 o'clock on the top and 2 on the body
settings for a single coil, and reverse that for humbuckers.

Hmmm... some food for thought here.
Tempted by a very reasonably-priced S/H G2 I've seen, but I'll also check
out any clips I can find of the AC2 or 3, as all my other effects are Boss
units, which have never let me down (maybe I shouldn't have said that last
bit...). They've become a tad pricey, though. :-(

Not sure about the A2, as I already get a decent sound with my acoustics (a
Gibby J45 VS Reissue and a '64 Martin D18)...

Thanks, guys!

One of the guitarists in my band used the Boss for a while and sounded
quite convincing in a full band context. Solo'd wasn't so great, but
in the mix, sounded enough like a generic acoustic to get by.

However, he now uses a VG strat when he wants to get acoustic tones,
plus it does a very convincing 12 string :)

Thanks again.

Having nosed around a bit more, I'm struck by how many bad reviews this Boss
unit (and the AC-2) gets...

So I've just bagged a mint Zoom G2 on ebay for a reasonable 51 euros - I'll
let you know my findings with this when it arrives. I'll admt to also being
more than a little intrigued by the pitch shift/harmonizer functions...
