Then the subject line is inaccurate. Further, is it really too mcuh
trouble to make a single post to separate groups?
This is coming from rmmga where we take not so much interest in those
other groups.
One person's "pwecious" is another person's polite.

It's always been impolite to cross-post.
The folks that do so are generally blissfully ignorant of this
long-standing Usenet etiquette guideline.
Ignorance is bliss.

That's called "multi-posting", and it is generally considered to be
even poorer manners than cross-posting.
> This is coming from rmmga where we take not so much interest in
> those other groups.
And the rest of the groups care how, exactly?
> One person's "pwecious" is another person's polite.
The polite course is to decide, when /starting/ a thread, in which
newsgroup it is most appropriate, and to post to that group /only/.
Cross-posting should be considered a sort of emergency exception, and
multi-posting an unnecessary evil.

From uk.music.guitar FAQ:-
Q: What about crossposting? I notice that there are other guitar related
groups like alt.guitar?
A: That's not a good idea. The flamage in alt.* tends to be much higher
and long running flame wars tend to drown out reasonable discussion.
alt.guitar is no different in that respect and seems to have a few
individuals more interested in flooding the group with bickering. It was
to get away from that that uk.music.guitar was first proposed so - no,
crossposting to alt.guitar is not a good idea.
http://www.ukmg.org.uk/faq.html
I'm sure other groups have similar conventions.
Follow-ups set to uk.m.g

That is simply not so. Cross-posting is abused nowadays, but its initial
intent was to inform other groups or relevant issues that arose
elsewhere. Usenet's academic beginnings encouraged such collaboration.

You are incorrect.

Curiously, you cross-posted your reply, no doubt from ignorance.

"M"or as he is known here, Marc Mulay, ripped off those songs
and posted them to his soundclick page pretending that they were his.
the real name of the song "Good Blues" is really Blues Makes Me Feel So
Good" by Albert Cummings
The only part to the song Mulay contributed was some of the over dubbed
crappy background noise,

Not at all. If I post the same question to numerous groups individually, I
may get the answer that I'm looking for in one group but people in other
groups may still go out of their way to find my answer, unaware that my
problem has already been resolved. By cross-posting to related groups,
everyone can see the responses.

trolling is evidence of your eternal bliss.

Right. Furthermore, newsreaders are not (generally speaking) smart
enough to mark multi-posted articles as read after one of their
number has been read.
> By cross-posting to related groups, everyone can see the responses.
Right again - and newsreaders /can/ sort out read flags on
cross-posted articles.
So, when we are faced with the choice between cross-posting and
multi-posting, we would do well always to choose cross-posting.
BUT...
...cross-posting is still a bad idea, in general terms. It tends to
lead to cross-culture clashes and misunderstandings, split threads,
and the potential to stumble unwittingly into hitherto unexplored
troll mines. Therefore, it is wise to avoid cross-posting an OP
wherever possible.
Think of it as a rule NEVER to cross-post. (The purpose of rules is to
make you stop and think before you break 'em.)

That "rule" is founded on people who abuse the system. If the OP had
cross-posted to wrestling and political newsgroups, I'd agree with you. The
OP, for reasons known only to himself, chose to cross-post to related
newsgroups. That should be acceptable to any rational person.

Well, no. People who deliberately abuse the system aren't interested
in "rules". The "rule" is for people who *don't* wish to abuse the
system. Observing it makes sense, but breaking it makes sense too,
sometimes.

The OP's list of cross-posts looks reasonable to me, although perhaps
alt.guitar.effects is a slight stretch (I'm going purely by its name,
since I don't read that group).

The OP had recently posted significant content to that group (cross-posted
to alt.guitar, the group from which most replies subsequently emanated), so
it was reasonable that he included that group in the list of groups for this
thread. I can only assume that he's previously posted to the other groups
as well.
As far as I can tell, he's only recently discovered Usenet (or has returned
after a long absence).

Here's my friend Smokin' Ray. We tried some Blues to jam with.
http://www.soundclick.com/smokinray
Just rough ideas from a month or so ago, some using a synth guitar for
sax and piano lines, or for a simultaneous bass. I played the drums on
most of these and some bass too with Ray on the guitar, although guitar
is my main instrument too. We made some videos but they're like waaaay to
big to upload.
He is also really into one-off and/or DIY tube amps and shzt, plus we
always wipe the dust off my old amps like the HIWATT and SVT when he is
in town.

This page hasn't been updated since 1998.
Maybe you should read this exchange back in 2000.
http://tinyurl.com/yff2k3g
The upshot was that, following discussions with UK Usenet Committee -
responsible running Usenet in the UK - and myself, on behalf of the
group, it was agreed that the FAQ would take precedence as it was a
more accurate representation of the groups wishes. There was no
formalisation of this as it was not seen as neccessary at the time
and has gained authority through 'custom and practice' over the last
9 years.
Besides, rule 1 for Usenet nettiquette is:- Before posting to a
new group for the first time, read the FAQ if there is one.
ukmg FAQ is at www.ukmg.org.uk/faq.html
Follow-ups reset.

Something about the anonymity and the safety of not being in the
physical presence of the people with whom one is interacting turns some
folks into rude, aggressive idiots, folks who might in person be quite
affable and reasonable. It might be the same sort of thing that can
happen when one is driving: I sometimes find myself calling other
drivers some pretty horrible things, even though I'm not actually angry
at them. "Are you going to let me in, you @#$%^&^%$%#?" I'll actually
utter this in quite a mild tone. Maybe it's therapeutic to be able to
talk like that without consequences.
Take that to usenet, where the recipient of the perceived insult
actually reads it and can answer back, and mindless savagery arises.

There are no rules in Cyberspace. Cross-posting adds to communication by
reaching a larger audience. Don't want to be reached? Unplug your computer.

By continually cross-posting to this group (do what you want with the other

I used Arp X-8 arpeggiator software , a Korg nx5r synth and a midi-out
keyboard
to punch in a few notes; the X-8 does all the sequencing semi-
automatically (I
have to set up the individual arpeggiators for each patch to behave
how I want
them to once I turn them on, and it plays them all at once with one
push of a midi key).
The other interesting thing I did was with the fx noises on a couple
of the guitar
tracks, where I took the acoustic guitar track and processed it with
multiple runs
of delay and feedback in Soundforge, and remixed it back with the
original.
Presto change-O , acoustic guitar fx .

That is very true, and rmmga has had a couple of really bad examples in the
past year (Keith Adams, RIP, and Little Charlie for those who don't
remember). However, I made a reasoned decision to cross-post in this thread
so that different groups might get an appreciation of each other's style.
<g> It also gives me an opportunity for promo across a potentially wider
readership. FWIW, I think rmmga (maybe also other groups) is inclined to be
elitist and a little cross-cultural fertilisation may get alleviate the
effects of long term inbreeding depression from which I think it might
eventually go down the gurgler.

Really?
My approach to newsgroups has always been to jump in feet first and
make a point of insulting anyone who's sig. line appears more than
once.
At least that way everyone knows what kind of moron they're dealing
with...hem hem....
I'm always amused by the way UKMG is so polite and more-or-less on
topic. RMMGA flies off at any tangent it feels like - strange, given
the common interest in guitars (music comes second - both groups are
running on GAS).

Tony, I agree completely.
Having said that, RMMGA seems to be the only group which is dedicated
to acoustic guitar, and whenever I find myself talking about, you
know, electric stuff I feel a little guilty, but then, it's all music,

UKMG used to be like that - check out threads from around 1999-2001,
when the group was at its peak in terms of both traffic and surreal
gibberish (the latter was entirely Paul Simpson's fault). But things
change. When everyone has access to broadband, there's no need for
Usenet... IRC serves a better community purpose for a lot of us now,
and web forums give more immediacy in terms of multimedia content.
Maybe things just evolved differently on RMMGA?

And play what, "Viva Viagra"?
No, srsly... now and again. But not too much. A "Tuesday Night Music
Club" would be a good thing, but it's hard to have fun without some
measure of structure anymore. That usually means goals.
Without the structure, it always ends up repeating a lot, and I lack
the patience for that anymore.
Bummer, but there it is.

What is IRC?
RMMGA is like a bunch of pen-pals (and I don't mean that in a bad
way). Despite being set up by an Englishman (our Great Leader, Guy
Snape) it's mostly populated by Americans, who seem to have a very
strong campfire tradition, which we don't have here in the UK.
Maybe it's something to do with the weather...:-)

Hi Pete,

OK, you wrote the FAQ and that's commendable. Believing it has gained legal

Why do you think BBC is popular here? No ads! We get to choose whether
we get ads or not by choosing BBC or commercial channels. Likewise here
in ukmg we get to choose and we chose no crossposts. If we want
crossposts (and flame wars) we can go to alt.guitar. In the words of
the meerkat - "Seemple [schick]"
Can we now drop this and move on as its now degenerated into a pointless
slanging match?

Because we have no choice but to pay for it. It's been going downhill
for the last seven or eight years.

I choose to watch 'Video on Demand', which means that I have no ads, can
watch what I want whenever I want and still get to pay for the BBC's
social engineering and propaganda.

Why not just configure your newsreader to filter posts crossposted to
more than 1 or 2 groups?
You Just need to use a regex for however many colons in the xref header.

You think you have it tough. Imagine having to pay for it AND have adverts,
like the Germans and Austrians at least do. :-(
Add to that the typical German Euro-crap" quality of their programmes and
the BBC suddenly starts looking like a bloody good deal.

You (wrongly) assume most people use a configurable Newsreader. Besides
why should I have to go to the effort to remove litter from a newsgroup
it shouldn't be dropped in, in the first place?

A lot of people accessing NGs are via places like Google - which isn't
usenet as such I suppose. Also a lot of others don't know about filters and
are not programmers. An average person probably wouldn't recognise a regex
if it got up and bit them.

Quite. And how many people who use Outlook to read News know how to set
it up to exclude articles posted to more than 2 groups?
Anyway, the guy is trolling. HTH HAND was an old sign-off by trolls and
resetting groups back to the original clutch was an old tactic to keep
the ball rolling and the noise level high.

Yep. Most use a web page to access it now - be it Google or any
of the other web access service. care to tell the folks how you
use a regex to count colons in the xref line for those?

Mr. Mulay has a long and richly-documented history of stealing songs from
commercial releases, overdubbing his own wretched guitar track, then
changing the name and posting the results as all his own work. When people
in alt.guitar.amps began spotting the stolen tracks, Mulay insisted they
were original compositions and that he'd played all the instruments. When
that became a pointless exercise in falsehood he admitted he'd used
commercial tracks but claimed what he was doing amounted to "covers" of
those songs--clearly a gross misuse of that term since he was using the
original recordings without permission. Mulay is a serial thief and liar,
and though he shifts screen names frequently in hopes of deceiving people
his corruption always shows through sooner or later. If you think that's
pathetic you should hear his life story as told by him--he's a fighter
pilot, a champion boxer, a stockbroker, an accomplished musician and
composer and so on and so forth. It's quite a tale, but one nobody familiar
with his sad history in Usenet guitar groups takes seriously.

And mine are here now, http://www.myspace.com/tenesbit
I only have videos up, mostly of me playing, but since I don't have a
band page, that is the only way I could upload music onto the site.
I've also hd problems using Windows Mail, could not send emails or
respond to newsgroups, so I have had to join Google in order to do
that. That said, I hope someone enjoys the sounds they do hear.

Actually, it's the other way around. If you're going to post the same
message to multiple groups, the way to do it is to crosspost, so that
once your message has been seen in one group, the reader's newsreading
software will not repeatedly show it in other groups. The reasoning is
*technical*, not whimsical.
> The folks that do so are generally blissfully ignorant of this

The etiquette guideline you refer to, though, suggests to avoid
"multi-posting" (posting the same message separately to multiple
groups), and to _limit_ crossposting to no more than a handful of
closely related groups, preferably NOT including any moderated
newsgroups.
What you've asked the OP to do is to post his message separately to
multiple newsgroups.

Indeed.

yet but there is some old stuff here: www.myspace.com/johnbooth54.
From the stats, I don't think too many have listened :-(

John, fwiw, I liked The Best Times Are Yet To Come as well as You
Don't Know.
Music, whatever we play and however we play it, provides us with more
personal
joy than almost anything else. Laugh at the mega [-] types
online...they're legion. M

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride, no? Do what you can to keep
your
chops and I'll bet somehow, some way you'll move other things around
to make
the time...unless you're speaking generically about the finite time
we've all got
enroute to the expiration date...or worse, you're -not well... M

Oh, I'm well enough, just busy (mixing amateur dramatics with helping
run a folk club and a full-time job too). Mind you, that final "use
by" date is getting nearer and I've got so many ideas...
But they do say, if you want something done, ask a busy person...

I've got plenty of time but the only stuff I've got I could upload was
recorded at a gig in a pub about eight years ago - hardly
representative of what I've done since.
I wouldn't know where to park it either..:-)
