Guthrie Govan on later with Jools Holland
OK, so I'm not a fan of rap in any form really, however I've just
seen something which was good. Dizzee Rascal on Later with Jools
Holland with (unless I'm much mistaken) Guthrie Govan playing some
very bluesy slide guitar for the song. Well, well well....

Worth watching on iPlayer or on the extended show on Friday. Hmm
hard rock meets rap. Interesting indeed.

cheers to all

Rap is slowly emerging from the gutter to being almost music. I blame
Eminem, personally, for realising that you can actually have a riff,
not just a drum line to work with.

Jay Z was on the telly the other night. I could almost understand him,
but the number he did had a genuine chorus and when the girlie singer
took it the whole number lifted from mediocrity to a really quite
tasty bit of soul.

I will never accept rap as music to my ears sorry. Melody rules ok? lol :)

There's also a performance of it over on Radio 1, in Dizzee's studio:

I know exactly what you mean, but would suggest that if Buddy Rich had ever
recorded a track consisting of a five minute solo on the drum kit (and he
might have done), it could not have failed to be very musical. But that's a
very different kettle from what is usually thought of as rap, of course.

I haven't seen the Jools programme yet, but the performances in the
Radio 1 Live Lounge were fantastic. Really great vibe and some nice
drumming from Mr Rascal himself. I'm really looking forward to getting
the new album if these songs are an indication.

True.

I never thought I'd be into anything remotely related to rap... but I played
and gigged with a band since May [1] whose main character is a rapper. It's
a bit of rap, he sings a bit too (not very well, but we also had the
guitarist who sings well, and a female backing singer). It was a bit of
funk/blues mixed with rap. And it was pretty interesting (whichis why I
joined). I was surprised I liked the result. But the truth is if one moves a
bit beyong lyrics about "bitches and hos" and "busting a cap on yo ass,
motherfucker", a rapping style can be used in a very musical way.

[1] I left the band just two weeks ago, due to non-musical differences. When
a band stops being fun, great music won't save it for me.

I always felt some Richard Thompson songs were sort of his take on Rap -
consider "Bone Through Her Nose" or "Don't Tempt Me".

This is so ancient but I can't resist it...

On the day Buddy Rich died his bassis rang his wife nine times to ask
if it was true. Eventually the exasperated wife said "Why do you keep
calling? I've told you eight times already today that Buddy has died!"

The bassist said "Year, I know, I just can't hear it often enough!"

Fortunately your ears aren't the sole arbiters of what constitutes
music. If melody rules, what happens with harmony? Rhythm? You can
have as much melody and harmony as you like, but the only one that
actually vital for it to be music is rhythm.

Which reminds me of an old friend, whose "party piece" was to start drumming
arhythmically on the pub table whilst "singing" (out of tune):
"I (drum, drum) got (drum, drum, drum) rhy (drum) thm (drum, drum, drum,
drum)"...etc.
You had to be there...

I thought the opposite. The original rap songs, like Rapper's Delight,
were musical. The current crop all have me reaching for the channel
button.

I've got one of those too, but it's always just a bit too far away to
reach. That's why it's called a remote control. :-(

Get your wife to do it (although, when it comes to TV remotes, that's
possibly delegating excessive powers). ;-)
