Music Homework Help Required.
My daughter's, not mine.

"Find six songs which use chords I, IV & V"

Now obviously I could point her at all the 12 bar based songs I know
but a] I'd like to be a little more inventive and b] this is year 8
[12 to 13yrs] so I'd also like to suggest some songs she and her class
migh have heard of.

She came up with - Scouting For Girls - She's So Lovely. I suggested -
James - Sit Down. I think American Idiot by Green Day qualifies too.

Any other suggestions welcome. The more modern the better.

If you exclude the VI minor, it cuts out a lot of today's stuff- the
only ones that I can think of at the moment are the Dubliners' "Seven
Drunken Nights" ("Five Drunken Nights" for under 14s), *most of*
Sweet Home Alabama without the "boo hoo hoo" bit, "King of the Road",
and "Man of Constant Sorrow". I'll try to think of more.

Only a quick look at recent artists in iTunes, but how about...

"Alfie" - Lily Allen (there may be other chords, but the verse is I-V
and the chorus is IV-I-V-I)

Careful Cane - from experience you can confuse music teachers ;-)

Whilst teaching my daughter guitar a few years back, we looked at the
major and minor pentatonic scales and then the blues scale.

When it came to writing a piece for some coursework, my daughter wrote a
piece using the blues scale. The teacher marked her write up of the
piece saying there was no such thing as the blues scale!!!!

No wonder kids of today turn to computer pap for music.

Isn't that some sort of heresy?!

If you allow The Dubliners, isn't Wild Rover simply various permutations of
I, IV & V?

90% of traditional Irish folk music is I, IV, V with the odd relative minor
thrown in.

How about "Angels" by Robbie? The verse is I-IV-V.

True enough, but how many Irish drinking songs or Fenian war cries should a
year 8 class know about? Safer to stick with Happy Birthday and some old
English carols (The holly & the ivy, and the Sussex Carol). Either that or
Driftin' Blues.

I didn't think they'd fit in with what Cane asked for in his original post :
"Any other suggestions welcome. The more modern the better."

"All The Things You Are" (Jerome Kern):

In fact, it uses chords built on almost every interval in the major and minor
scales, including the root, fourth and fifth. Not for nothing was it
nicknamed "All The Chords There Are" in the bebop era.

Did you mean *only* use I, IV and V?
Just about the whole of our set!

Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol - I V IV I
You're All I Have - Snow Patrol - I IV .... V IV V IV
500 Miles - Proclaimers - I I IV V

Cheers,
