*BUXTON* Tech
As per usual, we'll be having a supplied backline: please DON'T bring
an amp unless I've asked you to, there's not a great deal of space and
it's going to be bad enough with cases.
As far as effects go, if you need 'em, fine, but please be ready when
it's your turn so we don't spend five minutes fartarsing around
between songs, mm? There will be a couple of electronic tuners
available at or near the sound desk, so please PLEASE take advantage
of them before you appear on stage as well. (We tune because we care.)
Acoustic folks - please if possible bring or borrow a guitar with a
pickup: it's just less hassle.
As far as I'm aware, we have the room from 12: if folks could kindly
refrain from stacking the stage and apron with guitar cases as soon as
the room's available, it'd make for a happy Penfold. Also, if anyone's
willing to cover sound when I'm on stage, that'd be appreciated.
Ok. So far we have:
Backline:
Guitars: 2 x Tipton, 1 x Boogie combo, courtesy of Mr. Ridney of
this parish - as far as I am aware, all of these are dual channel
clean/crunch + dirty (Trev - footswitchable?)
Would it be practical/sensible to stick a DS-1 or
SD-1 or TS in front of each amp?
Keys: stereo keys amp courtesy of Andrew Lefty
Bass: as yet unspoken for
Instruments:
Right-handed drum kit courtesy of Paul Rowbottom
XP80 Synth courtesy of me (with double stand) - please can anyone
else who's playing keyboards give me an idea of what patches they'll
need?
Nord organ courtesy of Andrew Lefty
PA:
Me. Current plan is about 1KW (headroom rocks) FoH) plus 4 x beefy
monitors and four or five vocal mics
My intention is to mic kick and snare (mostly for the monitors)
and the vocals - given the size of the room I'd prefer NOT to mic the
backline, so please don't make me send someone down there to turn you
down!
Acoustic:
1 x Marshall acoustic amp (2 input) from Jon Edwards (via NigeE)
We could probably use another, or I can bring my Berhinger
Ultracoustic

Thanks Mike - we should do fine with all that.
Re the acoustic bit, I shall be bringing a Yamaha electro-acoustic lefty,
which I'd be pleased to lend any other lefties doing acousticy things.

Nor me. It's going to be a bit of fun playing throgh a Mesa which
isn't a MK IV....
Is the Mesa an all valve thing, or is it compromised in some way? I
really hate tranny amps (it's a pup thing..:-)

I'm not sure whether Trev's as a Mark III or a Mark IV

This is a joke, right? :-)
Yes, the Mesa Boogie is an "all valve thing".
If you knew Trev Ridney you wouldn't have asked that question :-)
(He's not keen on Trans-gender amps)

In that case I shall look forward to having a thoroughly opinionated
conversation with the above-mentioned Mr. Ridney in Buxton!
I've tried out several Mesas in shops but I haven't got a clue what
models they were. The MK IV sticks in my mind simply because it has
more crunch than a Crunchie bar, and I have quite a lot of GAS for one
of those pretty ones with solid wood cases and cute rafia work fronts.
Last one I saw new was £1600 - a bit much for someone with even my
extravagant tastes - and that was 20 years ago..:-)

The amps in question are:
A clone of a model 1987 4 hole Marshall in a 1 x 12 combo with TAD valves,
sporting a post-phase inverter Master volume
A clone of a model 2204 Marshall in a 1 x 12 combo, sporting Mullard valves.
I know, I spoil you lot. It's my only weakness ;)
A Mesa/Boogie 50 Caliber+ combo, as modded by er, me, to include a 'drive'
pot as per the MKIII*
The first does sparkly clean through to AC/DC type crunch
The second does sparkly clean through to Whitesnake type raunch
The third does Fender clean through to footswitchable insane metal overdrive
All of them all valve. Not solid state. Dear me, no.
Attendees may wish to bring their distortion stompboxen, although there will
be stomp boxes on hand. Towit, an Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer, modded to have
the original 4558 Op Amp chip; a Boss DS1, modded by me to remove the fish
and chip shop accompanyment, plus a Tipton Cobra clean boost pedal. Like the
MXR Microamp, but much less noisy.
*This one's for sale *after* Buxton.
OK. Tea break over. Everyone back on their heads.

Trev is no more opinionated than any of us. He just really knows his stuff
when it comes to valve amps.
If you want to talk valve amps with him, the conversation will be long,
useful and interesting.
I'm more interested in plugging a guitar into one his other amps - I've
already got a Tipton Slasher.

The Mk.IV is a good amp that has some really good sounds in it.
Finding them again is the problem with all those push pull pots on the panel
:-)
IIRC the Boogies (or Mesa if you like) have three gain stages in the
pre-amp.
I'll stick with my Peavey Classic 50 & Tipton Slasher.
They sound good and are easy to use.

That sounds about right.
You can second hand ones for a bit less these days...

Come to think of it, is anyone bringing a proper, old-fashioned
