GAS - Squier Classic Vibe 60s Strat
GAS strikes again...
There's a story behind this latest purhase: when I was at Uni I had a
mate called Michael who had the most amazing '62 Strat reissue - glossy
neck, sunburst finish, aged parts, top stuff. When put thru another
mate's ancient valve combo you could get incredible Hendrixy sounds from
it - you can see the Strat in this pic:
http://www.zen92285.zen.co.uk/classicvibe/n542936900_1093569_8230.jpg
Time moves on, I left Uni, I bought further Strats, but I always
remembered that Sunburst Strat... I never, in all the years of looking,
found another one as good as that one.
Recently I bought an '82 JV Squier Tele from a friend of friend in here
(hi Penfold) and did some online research on these guitars, which led me
to this excellent site:
http://www.21frets.com/
The site specialises in info about early Japanese Vintage Squier
guitars, and looking at the pictures on there it sparked memories about
my mates Sunburst Strat from all those years ago. Then I noticed the
guy that ran the site had put this page up:
http://www.21frets.com/Classic_Vibe_Series.html
Googling showed that Classic Vibe Squiers were getting rave reviews from
unlikely quarters, including hardcore vintage Fender enthusiasts. The
Classic Vibe 60s with the aftermarket mint green pickup was the spitting
image of my mates old guitar... I tried one in a shop in Liverpool and
was blown away - this was *exactly* what I'd been looking for all these
years! Glossy neck, superb build quality, great pickups... everything.
I bought it on the spot - here it is 'out of the box':
http://www.zen92285.zen.co.uk/classicvibe/BILD0296.jpg
I then ordered and fitted a replacement mint green pickguard (12 weeks
delivery from Fender... ouch) and here's the result:
http://www.zen92285.zen.co.uk/classicvibe/BILD0310.jpg
http://www.zen92285.zen.co.uk/classicvibe/BILD5551.jpg
http://www.zen92285.zen.co.uk/classicvibe/BILD5552.jpg
Its taken me some time to get my 'dream Strat', but I'm very happy with
the result :) All other Strats are now null and void - even my
workhorse Strat I've had since I was 15 is now in retirement and stored
under the bed.
Just need a valve amp now, and I'm set to do some recording again :)

Don't delude yourself. In three month's time you'll want one perfect
for slide.

Leeds guitar show is on this Sunday at Pudsey Civic Hall. Matamp are usually
there. Why not try out some amps with it?

Cute! I'm hearing so many good things about the Classic Vibe
Squiers... if only the buggers would make a lefty Duo-Sonic or 50s
Precision bass...

Now *that's* nice... I'd be sorely tempted myself; if only they were

After trying nearly every Jazz Bass Fender makes, I bought the Classic
Vibe Jazzer as I thought that it was as good as any and better than
many.
Frank played it at Buxton last year.
I thought about changing the pickguard for a nicer torty but there's
no need.
I thought about putting in *better* pickups but there is no need.
I think that every now and then Squier make some super guitars.
I'm thinking of the JV series in the 80s, the Vista and Pro-tone
series of the 90s and now the Classic Vibe series.
They never seem to stay in production for very long though.
Steve.

I'm kinda gassy for one to relic / mod myself, however I also like the
FMT Tele (Korean) and Aerodyne Strat (Japanese) both in flame top red
which don't need relicing to look cool.
I'm just pissed that I didn't buy a Mex when they were £280

But I'm picky and would like LPB with a rosewood neck :-)

I've been reading up on these guitar last night and this morning, Thanks
for the info. I've been after another strat ever since i sold my
american vintage series strat (big mistake).
What online store would you recommend? I don't think i'll get the
opportunity to play one before i buy. At this price I really don't mind.
A maple fretboard and a sunburst would be my preference, apart from the
pickups... Is the build quality and guitar on the 50's compared to the
60's pretty much the same? One of these would sound really nice through
the Fender Deluxe reverb amp guru Trev is currently building for me.

I did, and a lovely instrument it is too. The volume controls on Steve's Squier
VV Jazz are better than on my Japanese Fender Jazz bass. I can't blend the
pickups, with mine they're either on or off (I presume the volume pots are
logarithmic on mine) whereas on Steve's VV the range of tones is impressive.

Well mine's the Sunburst finish and it definitely looks the business with a
torty guard.

Mine has Vintage USA Pickups, but Steve's point is valid. Whatever PUs are
fitted to Steve's are really rather good.

Snippage...
They do....you just have to be lucky enough to be in a guitar shop at
the same time as you're buying strings and there's an irresistable one
on the wall going for120 quid. And all white, nevermind the 'burst
finish and the torty guard and the logarithmic USA pickups...
But then you're talking about basses, aren't you?
My completely trashy (but with quite a nice neck) Chinese (Korean,
Singaporean, German, Isle of Man....) Squier makes a noise just like
Hendrix through a wah-wah. In other words, it sounds like a train
wreck done on purpose. Perfect - if you play like me....:-)
I can't see (or imagine hearing) the crummy electronics on any Squier
bass (with the possible exception of the Telecaster-shaped ones that
that appalling Canadian girl used to play) sounding anything like a
real Fender.
I do wonder, given the amount of stuff that is available to change the
sound of any given instrument why we bother to look for guitars that
do nothing but look and feel nice.
The rest of the sound can be just added afterwards, surely.
Having said that, I use pick, strings, guitar, lead, amp. This has, of
course, led to the purchase of 10 or so guitars so I don't have to
fuck around with wires.....

I've snipped the rest of your reply, Pete, because I'm not altogether sure what
the point is that you're making. If you're happy with your Squier bass, that's
really all that needs to be said.
I'd like to install some better volume pots in mine that would give me the
gradual blending of the PUs like Steve's Jazz bass does. Other than that, I
think my JB is rather nice.

OTOH no amount of pickup/hardware changing is going to compensate for a
body/neck combination which just doesn't hit it off - try and play your
intended acoustically before committing. The louder/'sustainier' it is, the
better it will sound when plugged in. I learnt this the hard way yonks ago,
with a maple/sunburst '78 Strat which looked the biz but sounded awful, no
matter what I did to it.
Its replacement, on the other hand... [deep joy]

Different ball game altogether, although you have to look fairly hard
to find a Squier with a really good neck. Not sure I'd want to spend
as long as it might take to find a bass with a decent one - when bass
necks go they really go, whereas with (eg) a Squier Strat you can
afford to treat it like a constuctor toy, basses don't come quite so
cheap. I'd sooner buy a MIM with a decent neck and then start farting
around with the hardware than a Chinese one which might be all over
the place in a year or two regardless of the mods.

I haven't got a Squier bass. I can play the bass, but I'm no bassist,
I can assure you - I play bass the same way I play lead - erratically.
I assume a PB is a P bass? Both replies to my reply have snipped half
of my response. I can't remember everything!
If it is a P bass, you gotta remember that it was made famous by
Bootsie Collins, and the noise that came out of the speakers had
nothing to do with what was coming out of the guitar. Why not just
find out what pots Fender use for Precisions and stick a pair of them
in? The rest of the tone will come from the amp anyway.

As I said in my post, I tried a lot of models from USA, Mexico etc.

Again, there is no need to replace anything. The bridge on my Chinese
Squier bass is a heavy casting with brass saddles and better than that
on any Fender from Mexico and most USA models.

I can't knock Squiers - I gigged a £120 Strat for about 10 years, but
having played a lot of them before I bought that one (I only took it
off the wall because it was white - mistake...so much for 'just
popping in for some strings') I was surprised to find one in my hands
that felt comfortable.
What gets me going is when you're having a conversation with an
American and they simply can't believe anything not made in the U.S.A.
is any good - and I've played a lot of U.S. Fenders and Gibsons I
wouldn't give you the time of day for - they seem to change the neck
profile every time they turn on the electricity.

I'd recommend checking out the demos on YouTube and signing up for the
21frets.com forums - lots of people in there who are knowledgeable about
JV and Classic Vibe Squiers. General opinion seems to be that all the
Classic Vibe instruments are excellent value across the board - from
personal experience I've had mine for some time now and the novelty of
how good it is hasn't worn off.
