Modulation's what you need...
...or rather, what *I* need. Yes, more pedalboard guidance required!
I currently have an Ibanez CSL Stereo Chorus[1] as my one and only
modulation pedal. Now, I've established that I could really do with
(read "need") a phaser, tremolo and univibe too. As I only really
tend to use one mod effect at a time, I don't really want (or have
space for) several pedals sitting switched off. Arguments for/against
true bypass don't even enter into it.
What I really need is one pedal to provide all my modulation needs;
preferably with the ability to store presets but almost definitely on
a 9VDC supply. So far, I've looked at:
* TC Electronics Nova Modulator - cracking piece of kit, but needs 12V
as far as I can see.
* Line6 MM4 - similar price to the TC and is 9V, albeit a high current
draw. Footprint's pretty big, too.
* Marshall RG-1 Regenerator - 9V, stomp-box sized, reasonable
effects. No presets though.
* Behringer FX600 Multi Effects - 9V, stomp-box, effects are... meh.
Again, no presets.
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I instead consider a Zoom/
Digitech/Whatever small-form-factor multi-fx unit? I don't need
drive, EQ or compression; they're already sorted.
Over to you, ladies and gents...
[1] I've just noticed a few of these on fleaBay for silly money! Are
they really that collectable?
Ross.

I had the rackmount modulation unit from Ibanez - extreme control of FX
to the extent of incredible pitch shift oddness. I can imagine why they
would be collectable.

I may be wrong here, but isn't the MM4 9VAC like most(?) Line6 gizmos?

After you have been mucking around with the phasing and vibings of a
modulation unit you will probably want to get a filter box with wah's and
trippy synth sounds, so you could end up looking at a multi FX like the
Line6 M13 (again I think it is 9VAC)

The Pocket Pod runs on 9V DC external power, and the co-axial socket is the
same way round as Boss.
Some pedals that come with AC supplies will work from DC of about the same
voltage (as the peak AC voltage, that is 1.4 times the RMS voltage which is
often what's stated) - this is true if the external power is fed into a
bridge rectifier and goes nowhere else in the circuit. However, an issue
then remains as to whether the pedal will operate with its audio earth
connected to one side of the DC supply, which will be imposed by other
pedals in the chain.
I have a Digitech EX7 'Expression factory' pedal - the one that's difficult
to switch on and off (probably the same as their Hendrix pedal, which uses
the same hardware) - which has an AC external supply. I have thought about
integrating it with a group of Boss pedals but, so far, I've taken the easy
option of keeping its separate AC power supply.

I have one - quite cheap....... that says it all really.
If I lost it, I wound't buy another fx600 to replace it.
But what do you expect for a £30 multi fx?

The Zoom G2 is reasonably small, cheap, and to me the modulation FX are
pretty decent. It'll store presets etc. You don't need drive, but it also
does a -in my opinion- very nice overdrive (supposedly based on the Boss
OD1).

How do these two grab you?
http://www.ehx.com/products/stereo-electric-mistress
this one does flange and chorus, may be enough for you.
or
http://www.ehx.com/products/worm
which does wah, phaser, vibrato and tremolo. Possibly less useful,
but I can't find one that does phase, flange and chorus!

Very nice, but they're 24V AC!!
Although the Zoom G2 that Jose mentions is also 9VDC, I think it's got
*too* many features for me... Having already gone down the multi-fx
route in the past, I'm not keen to go back there at the moment!
Thanks for all your input, guys - it's looking like the Marshall RG-1
is the only real contender... and I'll have to forgo the option of
presets!
Cheers,
Ross.

Second hand MXR Phase 90? Adds a bit of interest for solo's and boring
riddum bits, plus it's a dead cert for the Are You Gonna Go My Way
break! Hasn't been off my board since buying it from Justin P about 5
years ago!

you could always rip a few pages off the manual and pretend they weren't

Use a Microcube as an effects unit.
Not an elegant situation but it works!

Not to mention, it may be a handy tool to have anyway. Things like
NotWigan, or short outdoor gig slots for example where you may need a
a few certain sounds but can't/don't want to bring a whole pedal
board.
I've used my little pandora and two button Korg AX3B a few times for
this very reason. That highly compressed growl on Yankee Rose last
year? Pandora at play.

I see your point, but I really want something that will integrate and
stay on my pedalboard... Especially as I'm now eyeing up a Carl Martin
Octa-switch:

Pricey? Yes. Worth it? I think so. Multi-fx-type programming but
with my existing stompboxes.

Interesting concept, nice.
Although looking at the price, it would make me think of trying the Line6
M13. You get a LOT of possibilities there. A guitarist I play with has
dumped his pedal collection for an M13 plus a Vox wah and an additional
expression pedal... the M13 is fantastic.

Hi
I've been lurking on this forum for about 10 years and have only
posted once or twice but I saw the post and thought I could actually
contribute something useful.
Anyway I have the Marshall Regenerator and the uni-vibe on it is
actually pretty decent to my ears. The other settings, chorus',
phasers and flanger are just OK but nothing exciting. I picked mine
up second hand for 20 quid and it's worth that for the uni-vibe alone.
However, it doesn't have a tremelo on it.
The only pedal I've seen that has uni-vibe and tremelo that I can find
is the Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe . It's also 9 volt but it is a LOT of
cash. I think you may be able to pick a second hand one up on ebay for
a around £150 mark if you're patient.

Cheers Zeb,
I think I could probably live without the tremolo; it's the univibe
and phasing that I *really* want. I'll keep my eyes open for one s/h
(there was one on eBay this week - £35, no bids) and see where I go
from there.
I've also noticed a new phaser from Behringer - the PH-9 - wonder what
the inspiration there was? ;-)
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/PH9.aspx
It's one of the metal cased ones, like the DC9 compressor that already
lives on my board...

coming into this a bit late due to holidays without internet
access....
I solved all my delay/chorus/univibe/flange/echo requirements when I
bought a Yamaha UD Stomp. It's not 9V, so needs it's own mains, but
is otherwise a superb bit of kit.
Just another option you may like to trawl ebay for.

They're as rare as hen's teeth. I've been hunting one for a while now.
Magistomp has some of the modulation patches but its switch layout
is inferior.

I don't understand Yamaha's marketing strategy at all.
They bring out bits of kit which are the dog's goolies and then discontinue
them not long after.
I was toying with the idea of a Magicstomp a while back but they're going
for stupidly high prices on eBay - if you can find one, that is...
