*** Buxton - Venue change ***
Hi,

Some of you have have read on here that the Railway squeezed a fat one
off all over out plans for the National.

No fear. We fixed it.

We have a new venue at:

The Eagle
10 Market Place
Buxton
Derbyshire
SK17 6EQ
United Kingdom

http://homepage.mac.com/nigeleastmond/images/ukmg/ukmg1.jpg
http://homepage.mac.com/nigeleastmond/images/ukmg/ukmg2.jpg

http://homepage.mac.com/nigeleastmond/images/ukmg/ukmg5.jpg

This is the public bar of a proper northern pub with a
blood-and-beer-proof public bar and Hydes on tap. Normally, the lounge
bar would be given over for food. On Sat 7 Nov, the proprietor is
cancelling his food and thus giving the whole place over to us lot. Food
was going to be tough for him anyway as he is short-staffed that
weekend.

The landlord is music mad and says "the louder the better". He also has
an acoustic night on weekly and has asked that we let that group know
should a couple of them want to come along and watch. Some pro musos
etc.

The pub is located on the other side of Pavilion Gardens from the
Portland and the Buckingham. There is a Sainsbury's next door, eateries
all round and it is within easy walking distance of Pizza Express, the
Grove etc.

The pub has its own parking and a loading bay for the lounge bar. There
is plenty of power and no decibel limiter.

Thanks must go to Pete Gay for identifying the place and warming up
Craig France, the landlord.

I think I need a stiff gin.

Nige.

On the basis of the, I'll let the hotel bookings stand, so it's "As you
were, Gents".

The neat thing about this new venue, at least for the people who have booked
hotel rooms through me, is that it's about half the distance away from the
hotels that the Railway is. According to Google maps, it's a mere 7 mins
walk.

Well done Nige and Pete!
Point of order: I just had a look on Google and the street name is Eagle
Parade, not Market Place
I also had a quick gander at the local council's licensing page and am
pleased to see that they have a licence until 2 am - another improvement on
The Railway!

Congrats at finding somewhere else at such short notice.

It does look a bit cozy compared to The Railway so might be prudent to
'remind' people not to bring amps etc.

Even with that amp restriction, with the amount of guitars that will
be there folk might want to impose their own 1 guitar restriction ;-)

I just remember that SGI a few years ago where you couldn't move for
guitar cases.

Or we chip in for some elcheapo Encore / Harly Benton types that
everyone has to play then we burn them at the end of the night for
bonfire night.

That is a brilliant idea.

I think we will have to have some kind of amp ban, and just ask folk to
be reasonable about guitars. The place is bigger than The Harp. It's
also just bigger than the Roadhouse at Albrighton that we used in the
Year Of The Fire Safety Condemnation.

That just might work.
Having recently bought yet another guitar (Yamaha electro-acoustic) and
found that it won't fit in my cupboard with all the others, I've been eyeing
up all the existing ones to see which one might be for the firing squad to
make space for the Yammy. (There *is* a cure for GAS - it's called
house-room! OK, JimN, you've got an ever-expanding house ;-) )
So, here we go:
US Strat - no chance.
US Tele - likewise.
Gordon-Smith Graduate - my main gigging guitar, a keeper.
Gordon-Smith Gypsy - a contender; goes worryingly out of tune at times.
Danelectro U2. Hmm - are you quaking in your hard-case, Dan? It could just
be you! But there again, you're different...
So, which one for the funeral pyre, the Gypsy or Dan?

However, that means I'd have to play one of them in anger, which I haven't
done in ages, and don't particularly want to.

Decisions, decisions......

Thanks Nige - An on-line thank you is always mucho appreciated.

A couple of other things. If Craig (the landlord) isn't doing food,
the Chinese (about next door but one) is VERY cool. Looks like an
ornery Chinese but the food is ace and not the usual Leicester Square
shite.

Someone mentioned guitars and space. We've got the main bar but there
are other little ante-rooms knocking about where people can put cases
etc. I went to a wake there last year which had at least 100 peeps in
attendance, most of whom were musicians of one sort or another
(guitarists, violinists, banjo players, accordionists etc) and everyone
found room for the lumpy stuff (ie. cases).

There's a large-ish car park right outside in the marketplace so you
can always stash unneeded stuff in the motor outside if push comes to
shove.

There's also some sort of covered smoking area outside for when you
need to skin up....

Need to speak to Mike Whitaker - there may be high quality P.A.
available in Buxton from friends of mine for not very much money -
give me a bell.

Best,

Pete

Pete,

This makes you 'Manglement' so warm up your blues chops in A because I
am going to add you to the Georgia Satellites tune on my guitar slot
unless you squeak.

Blues chops in fine form, but have never heard of the Georgia
Satellites. MP3 or link required unless it's a straight up blues in
which case I can wing it.

I've always been Manglement - unfortunately it's been my brain which
has mostly been mangled..:-)

Will there be room for 2 drumkits, as Steve W doesn't play a regular
right or left handed kit IIRC, somwhere between the two!

Hi Jim. Good to 'see' you too!
Boy what I'd give to see that bonfire - we need a youtube video!-
alas pursuing a new career takes precedence, which is why I'm rarely
here.

Nope. We've used them before for the Hargate Hall do and they're quite
happy to dump the gear and let us get on with it.

I'm not really sure why they have it at all, but the stuff we've used
in the past has been excellent - ie better mics than SM57/58's etc.

I do need to speak to Mike thought, just to see what he needs.

Sorry, Mike - wasn't feeling particularly sidekick last night...

Drop me a line at persistent_offender@yahoo.com and let me know what
you need and I'll see if my guy in Buxton has got it.

Backline is down to us lot, but mics, mixers, amps, foldback &
speakers I can prolly get delivered. We can get into details offline.

Dave!

it's great to hear from you again!

A few times we've been talking about having another scottish get-together,
and one point was always "where's TNN?"

You can email me at this address (yup, it's real) so we can keep in touch.
It'll be good to see you, it's been a long time...
