*** Buxton - BIG PROBLEM ***
So, am am just back from going to pay for the venue, and I am happy say
that I have exactly the same amount of money that I left the house with.
This is because the Railway cancelled out booking in favour of some
girl's 15th birthday party.
I cannot be arsed with spelling out all the detail, but it seems that
the Railway has changed hands (again) and have a new booking system that
involves deposits and contracts. Anything that is not booked under that
system is not honoured. They say that they tried to contact me, but this
is nonsense as the number that have in the booking diary (now crossed
out of course) is correct. because I have no contract, I have no
recourse.
Now, I have some feelers out for a replacement venue, bit it dopes not
look good. We are late in the day now for November bookings and any
alternatives run the risk of being expensive, shit or dangerous.
I will know by the middle of next week if we are on or note.
I am dead sorry people. This is partly my fault for believing the
booking guy who sad we didn't need to pay until the night and partly the
Railway's fault for being unprofessional shysters.

Oh crap, can the Railway do it a week later or is changing the date a non
starter?

I swore at the lady. She probably hates me. She also wanted to add to
our bill the cost of two bouncers. Probably to protect herself from
getting hit in the moo.
I am looking at alternatives. There are a few around.

I have approached the Rugby Club and am getting costs and advice from
the Palace. I am also meeting someone tonight who knows the area better
than I.
Judging by how empty the Railway's diary looked, it's probably going to
be OK.
Plus 7th is the closest Sat to bonfire night, so I would imagine that
most function rooms would be available because people will be getting
their entertainment from blowing stuff up.

major bummer Nige. I'm sure the rest of Buxton's hotels, pubs, curry
shops, etc, will be absolutely delighted with the owners of the
Railway if we all en-mass have to cancel. I'm sure the local Chamber
of Commerce will be delighted to think about the impact on the wider
area.
I really hope you can find somewhere else.

Andrew,
I think we will.
I particularly loved the part where the goblin from the Railway said
"Please don't raise your voice in front of my customers. I am trying to
run a business!"
I thought "Fucking hell, woman. You just put a fifteenth birthday party
in on top of forty hungry, middle-aged beerheads with a rock fetish.
Bloody great business sense, that madam!"
I forgot to actually say it though.

Erm...
If we are going to cancel it or change the date, can we do it quickly and
let me know ASAP?
There are /a lot/ of hotel rooms reserved against my credit card...

Dave. I am looking after you.
We already have a yes from one venue and I just have to go and see that
it's like tomorrow. Then I have three more I am warming up. You will be
the first to know, but right now, only four hours after the shit news,
it's looking like it's going to be OK. We will know on Tues of
thereabouts.
Is that OK?

The venue you metioned on the phone will do very nicely thank you.
If half the distance away from the hotels that I've booked.
I'd be happy with that!

Nope, it's not your fault. I fail to see how the cut-throat
operations of an unscrupulous landlord can be laid at your door.
Years ago, I organised a Mini Meet, at Basset's Pole Island, nea
Sutton Coldfield. At the time there was a rather interesting
racing-themed restaurant there.
To cut a long story short, the management chucked out my booking,
because it was on the same day as Father's day.
Fortunately, with a week's notice, I managed to get an alternative
venue, just down the road, who were only too happy to feed us all and
have our minis in the carpark.
On the day, we all met up in the carpark at Basset's Pole, even
picking up a couple of local Mini enthusiasts who saw us. At about
2pm we all shot off to the other pub. Mr. Unscrupulous manager had to
watch as about 20 Minis, representing about 20-30 meals, disappeared,
leaving his place otherwise empty.
It always gives me a wonderful feeling of schadenfreude, every time I
pass the place, because it's now McDonalds.

"Trying" being the operative word here. As opposed to "successfully".
FFS, she's just turned down a complete private bar plus at least 20-30
bar snacks / lunches.
I just wish you lot were a bit nearer : Her Maj's sister would be more
than happy to get that amount of trade at the Weingut/Pension in
November, and I bet half the village would turn out just to watch.
We've even found a suitable Indian restaurant in nearby
Bernkastel/Kues, and you could have had a wine-tasting. It's a bit
far to travel for a weekend, though. (even though I've done the
opposite various times)...

Heh...Had a long and highly amusing conversation with Nige earlier,
during which the idea of tipping off a certain WPC Moss of the Buxton
Constabulary (a woman I know well, but not well enough, hem hem) that
the Railway pub would be hosting a 15th birthday party on the 7th
November....

There's a certain pub in the town where I live that once took issue with my
two boys drinking there "because of their age" (they were 18 & 22 at the
time)
I took issue with the landlady over this and asked why they were being asked
for ID everytime they went in.
"We check everyone that drinks in here's ID" she said.
"No you don't" I siad
"Yes we do" she said
"No you don't" I said, "There are a couple of 15 year olds drinking
Newcastle Brown in there"
"Huh!" She said, very arrogantly, "How do you know they are 15?"
"Because I'm their uncle!" I said
"Oh shit!" she said, "What are you going to do about that?" (Her face was a
picture at this point.)
"That, my dear, is for you to worry about...".
At which point I left because I couldn't keep a straight face any longer

Heh..you can get away with murder if you're discreet. I ran a pub in
Bath for a year and a half (got out before it killed me - Vodka for
breakfast is NOT a good move even if you are Jane Bond). I rang the
Bath po-lice to say that there were large numbers of kids taking
cocaine in my boozer and a) I didn't want to get busted and b) I like
drugs but coke turns people into gibbering morons and I've no time for
it.
The return 'phone call came from Radstock. What does this tell me?
There is no drug squad in Bath.

EH!! I thought the whole deal with these venues is they get *all* their
accommodation fully booked for the weekend guaranteed (or am I getting this
wrong)? Or is it the old 'bait and switch' routine where they 'promise' the
venue to get the accommodation booked then cancel the venue citing 'no
contract' but keep the accommodation bookings because there's a contract for
those?

That's a fairly cynical view. AFAIK there's no rooms to let at the
Railway. They just think they can make more money out of a birthday
party (which prolly won't start until late afternoon) than they can
out of a bunch of boozy guitarists who will be there all day.
More fool them. The margins on softs (and it IS a 15th birthday party)
are huge, but what they're going to get is a lot of 13-19 year olds
sneaking in half bottles of vodka and mixing it with their diet cokes
which will lead to a lot of highly inebriated under-aged girls puking
on the carpet because they can't make it to the bog in time.
There will also be fights involving pissed-up 17 year old spotty chavs
and the girls who's knickers they are attempting to remove, and quite
a lot of young women staggering around in broken heels looking like an
'after' advert for binge drinking.
There will also be lecherous uncles, and aunties who look like they
should be working part time in the 'Rovers Return' and the other half
time hanging out under the railway arches in corsets, red lipstick and
laddered tights.
I've half a mind to go...:-)

Hi Everyone,
sorry to hear the Railway has pissed on your chips so to speak. A
possible way round the kids' party might be to volunteer as kids'
entertainers for the day. You could sabotage the disco and then
gradually take over the do. Obviously, kiddie cover bands would have
an advantage - any suggestions?
Seriously,
I hope that you all get sorted and have an even better bash.
Cheers,
Alan

And the car park is now frequently a meeting place for bikers.
I go past there when visiting my daughter in Lichfield.

Nah - Norton Radstock is probably the crime capital of north-east Somerset.
Proof - Midsomer murders.
