Recommend some slightly-obscure guitar music...
I just got back from Austria. I was there playing and teaching at the
invitation of Thomas Leeb, whom I already knew was a fantabulous player
(www.thomasleeb.com), but the other guys I met out there I didn't know
exactly what to expect, and as such I have some recommendations for you all!

Gottfried Gfrerer - probably the best slide player I have ever seen.
Great songwriter too. http://www.gottfriedgfrerer.at/

Stuart Ryan - wow. Can play anything. Complete bastard. Obviously I've
read a couple of his columns in Guitar Techniques and he is obviously a
decent player, but on seeing him really do his thing - wow. I'm using
plastic scissors from now on in case the urge to cut off my fingers
takes over. http://www.myspace.com/stuartryanmusic

Thomas Fellow - jazz fingerstyle monster, and very funny for a German.
http://www.myspace.com/friendnfellow - Scroll down a bit and watch the
video on the right hand side. Most good.

Maybe we could turn this into a recommendations thread? I'd like to hear
some mo' new stuff.

I've started to listen to the sadly defunct Jellyfish again and after
realising just how wonderful they were all over again, started to
investigate more recent powerpop stuff.

There's a lot of it about!

Here's a couple - mostly guitar-led and very melodic:

Starclock by Starclock. Possibly the uberist stuff I've heard in this
line. Beautifully thought out guitar parts with heavenly and
harmonious vocals.

Owsley by Owsley - session player gets in on the act. Crunchy guitars
with a hint of XTC.

Now away from powerpop...

The Legacy edition of Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson - sublime
and proof if proof be needed that Brian didn't quite have all the
smarts.

Whilst we're at it: the demo tapes for Brian Wilson's "That Lucky Old
Sun" - another collaboration with Vandyke Parks and possibly almost as
good as "Orange Crate Art".

Thomas Dutronc - Comme un manouche sans guitare. A little manouche, a
little chanson, a little rock.

Finally an odd one - Meet Glen Campbell by Glen Campbell - just so
bloody well produced, played and sung. An album of covers, but not
what you'd expect. A bit Radio 2'ish but quality stuff.

Superb player. Sounds a LOT like Scott Henderson, but with something
like his own voice. Although there do seem to be a lot of Henderson
licks and sounds in there. Stage presence of a bank manager though! Not
sure why there are two drummers. I'm all for double drumming, but in
this example it's very rare they seem to do anything really creative
with it. Seeing one of the drummers seemingly just stop for a rest for a
while made me a bit cross! Obviously it might sound amazing in the
flesh. But I would rather hear a percussionist/drummer combo I think.

Melodically it is irrelevant bollocks.

In the first song, he looks like he's upset, like he's about to have a
tantrum. I like it as a vibe, it's intense. Nice fluid playing, I have
one gripe: he keeps moving up a semitone and back down again ALL THE
TIME. That's what Santana does when someone says "play jazz, Carlos".
Maybe that's a theme for that solo, but it's weirding me out.

The version of Donna Lee is pretty funny, and looks hard.
4-note-per-string scales physically kill feel IMO: unless you are
Holdsworth and can completely hide a watermelon in one hand, your pitch
colouring is killed by the hand position.

SO basically, I'm not *massively* into either of those guys, but they
are both sh1t hot players whom I would happily pay money to go and
watch! And I enjoyed watching them just now, thanks!

He has some Henderson, Krantz, Scofield and Howe bits but not enough of any
to be cloning, at least when you hear him for the first time and try to
figure out who it is. I can't think of anyone using Henderson's current
style, at least not that I've heard.

I'd like to know how he came up with that lurching tempo of the backing
track. When I first heard it I thought it was a technical fault on the flash
player!

A "melody" is where you play one song then immediately play another,
then another, all in a row without gaps.

You're meddling with the definition.

Sorry its a sickness. A "malady", you might say.
