Tanglewood question
When did the first Tanglewood guitar hit the uk market . I can go back
to maybe 84 ish ? when a friend bought a cheap Tanglewood strat ,
which i liked . Im asking because i may of bagged an early one for 20
quid ! , fingers crossed . And i do recall early ones been of a lot
higher quality than the ones currently on sale . Tanglewood strat
clones that is .

I intend to use it as a project guitar . Replacing pups tuners and
electrics .

Kinda wierd question, really. If you're going to change the pups
tuners and electrics as long as the neck and body are sound it doesn't
make any difference what the original brand was.

Their website tells me that they started selling acoustics in the UK
in 1991, but I'm sure I have came across a couple of electrics before
that. They were rubbish, but OTOH if you're going to completely refit
the thing then the above applies. It'll cost you a damn sight more
than 20 quid to build a guitar from scratch, fer sure.

Well its why i asked the question about old Woods . I believe the
first ones where built more or less to the same standard os Squiers
and Tokais , ALMOST .But If that not be the case then i have tuners
and some Pups already to replace anything dodgy . Pups are quite cheap
anyway so i figure i could have a cracking spare Strat axe with good
timbers and accurate shape/routing for around 50 bar all in . See what
develops . The guy has to dig it out of his loft first ..

For twenty quid you can prolly afford to lose the money anyway. The
plot is to take the strings off and see what the neck profile is like
naked. If it's got a truss rod (and I expect it has) then if it needs
a tweak you can see if it will take it - in other words, if the neck
is warped and you can't adjust it then it's no good. On the other hand
if you have the body then you've got a body for £20 which is still
cheap - get a new neck from Warmoth and put that on it.

Dunno about pickups being cheap - I've got a custom made with 3 EMG's
on it which is 7 years old and I reckon the pups were £120 each even
then - same with tuners - good ones will cost you more than a few bob.

Of course you can get cheap pups and tuners (if you're going to
compromise, get good tuners and cheap pups - depending on your style a
lot of the tone will be coming out of the amp anyway - and I love the
trashy sound of Squier pickups).

If you do the job properly, you'll spend as much on it as a Mexican
Strat off the shelf from your local music store - but you'll have more
fun doing it, and you won't have to spend whole afternoons listening
to lanky-haired teenagers playing Stairway to Heaven whilst you're
trying to do some serious shopping!
