OT: AVG Antivirus - no longer free?
Hi guys,
I know a few people here used to use AVG antivirus.
The version I have 7.5 which no longer gets free updates as of today.
There doesn't seem to be a replacement free product from AVG, which is
fair enough.
Can anybody recommend a good alternative?
Should I just bite the bullet and pay for something?
Cheers,
SteveW

Hi Steve - that's because we are now on v8, still free and still updated
:-)
http://free.grisoft.com/
Grisoft always phase out support for older versions quite quickly, which
is fair enough for an excellent piece of software that's free.

Yes - AVG_8_Free.
It's still free, you just have to fish around Grisoft's site to find
the download. It's a substantial upgrade and now includes antispyware,
so it's a complete replacement for 7.5.
File you're looking for is called
avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe

If you run into problems with AVG, try Avast - another freebie.

Contrary to the above, there is a free version of version 8.
I've been using it for 2 months now.

I fear I am going to get flamedfor this , but genuinely have no
commercial interes in what I am going to say nextt. If you bank with
Barclays , they give all personal online banking customers free 3
licence version of Kaspersky Internet Security 7, by download.
I was on AVG 8 and happy with it , but Kaspersky has a firewall too
and IMVHO runs a bit smoother and faster.
I shall now don my asbestos underwear

No flames here (apart from the top posting!).
Agreed - if you bank with Barclays, then by all means take the freebies that
they offer.
However, if you don't, the choice is buying security software - and then
paying a fee for updates/upgrades, forever.
Or getting some good free alternatives.
Which was the OP's point, I think.

Or rather - no longer GOOD????
I downloaded the new version, and now my internet speed is really
clunky. Really bad. If I navigate to a new page each little picture
gradually unveils, it's like I'm on dial-up.
Anyone else experienced this? I am pretty sure its AVG, because it's
only the FIRST time I view a particular page that it's like that. If I
ctrl+F5 the page it loads megafast, as usual.

It might be the link scanner, it seems to prescan pages and links to
check for nasties. If you do a Google search you'll see a green star
with a tick when it's done.
You can turn this off. Try it and see if it makes any difference.
There's a big debate going on at the moment about the extra bandwidth
this uses.
I'm not seeing the problems you describe but I'm keeping any eye on
things if the debate goes against AVG I'll be changing to something else
if they don't fix it.

Yes, it does a scan of everything it gets, so it probably will be slower
the first time.

I've disabled the "linkscanner" feature. Speed is back to normal now.
However my AVG system tray icon is constantly showing an error state, so
I'll never notice if there actually IS an error. Not that there ever has
been in the past.

Not sure what you mean.
I know why the error icon is displayed: it's because I've disabled one
of the functions, that's just the way it works.
But that means when there actually is an error (e.g. my virus database
is out of date) I won't know.

It will still auto update and scan so you should be fine.
However, this is the reason I'm keeping an eye on it. If AVG don't
either fix the way the scanner works or remove that particular function
as some are suggesting they should I'll be swapping AV software.
At the moment mine is turned back on and I'm having intermittent
problems with my web browser.
I use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer and the AVG scanner
sometimes causes it to crash.

Ahh - that is what I meant. I thought you didn't know why it was there.

No.
My PCs just have the kaspersky stuff on them. It is cheap and paid for
by the company, but I don't really use them for the internet anyway,
they are just work machines. So I don't really ever have anti-virus
issues!

I've used CA Antivirus for about five years now.
It's fairly cheap for a three license pack, and it's good.
There should be a free trial version here:

If you download the latest version of AVG free there is the option to
install the link scanner or not. Or you can turn it off in
firefox/addons or internet exlorer tools/manage addons.

Must say I've found v.8 to be a problem, but only on my workstation!
First it wouldn't install and I had to resort to the registry to get rid
of 7.5.
Then it crashed my PC every night at 4am when it was doing its scheduled
scan - so I turned off the scheduled scan.
Avast is good though, and I might well switch.

Thinking along the same lines myself.
Last night's AVG update necessitated a reboot, which is unusual.
After that, I couldn't get in to the AVG user interface "encountered an
error and needs to close".
I'll try a system restore and try again but if that doesn't sort the
problem, I'm off to investigate Avast too.

Update - went on to the AVG forum and was advised to reinstall AVG8 over the
