Fender Standard Tele for ?270?
<http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_0135102306.html>
Ten quid P&P - £280 all in. GAK is £295 all in. Anyone found a better deal?
I'm tempted :-) My birthday this weekend too. Could get to a local branch
and pick one out myself easily as well. It must be fate ...

Yep, but still a good price. Not so long ago, Mex Strats and Teles were in
the £400 bracket
And it has an alder body and a maple neck, like the American Series.
Our bassist has a Mex Jazz Bass and is very happy with it - even though he
could easily afford an American one.

I would be rather confused as to what i was actually getting with a
Mexican Strat . Is it just a case of cheap Mexican labour keeping
costs down or are the components just a cheaper quality . Sort of like
Epiphone is to Gibson .

They are Fender Telecasters made in Mexico. It's a good price for a
Telecaster and it's only brand snobs who "must" have an American. I believe
the Americans have a few marginally higher quality parts but its not
anything to shout about. The higher price for the american is about labour
costs afaik.
As to the other question Epiphone to Gibson is like Squier to Fender.
Squiers are outsourced to the far east and thus are much cheaper.

As far as I'm aware all North American Fender woodworking is done in the
same factory by CNC machines.
The assembly is done in the two different countries and the electrical
equipment and fittings vary in quality quite a bit.
The US Fenders have better quality electrical bits and fittings.
Also I believe that the Mexican factory gets the bodies made up of more bits
of wood, the US factory get as the bodies made of less bits of wood, but
that's possibly just a good rumour...
The US Fender necks have 'rolled edges' as well.

It is mexican costs and labour keeping the costs down. Not like epiphone
to gibson. The mexican factory is close to fenders headquaters, just
across the american/mexican california border rather than across the
other side of the world.
I have a mexican baja players telecaster and it is great. Compared to a
US telecaster, it is pretty much the same to play, but the baja has an
out of phase switch and a 4 way selector switch, whereas the standard
american has a different string post.
I am sure there are other differences, but I didn't notice when playing.

Good price, good supplier, maybe ask the shop if it comes set up??? go for
it, you can get bad USA tele's too.

They are different isntruments. They feel different. necks are different...
as far as I can tell.
Not saying that the mexicans are bad. I have a mexican strat and I love that
one. But they should be treated as different flavours of a guitar. Not the
same guitar made here or there.

I am the owner of a California Series strat which was made in the mid/late
80s for less than 2 years. It was built in Mexico from American parts and
enough of the production done in the US to warrant the application of USA on
the headstock decal. I believe finishing was in Mexico because of the more
stringent US pollution controls which pertain in California - (Now who said
the US has no sense of irony?).
I am more than happy with this guitar and I read that it was put out of
production because it was competing too closely with the full US version.
Like the current Mexican version in was on offer at a really good rate here
because Sound Control had collared the bulk of the stock and prices went
from £399 down to £299 eventually. They had teles on offer too.

The Mexicans wind their own pickups. The necks are partly made in the
USA, I think, then shipped to Mexico.

=======================
On the Mexican strats I have seen the pickups are different, large bar
magnets across the back rather than individual pole pieces, they sound less
crisp and more rocky to me. Don't know about the Tele pups.

If your local branch has a few to play around with you'll get a good
one. I bought a Mexican 'Nashville' Tele years ago (In Nashville
itself, funnily enough). That was in about 2001 when the Mexican
facility was pretty much new. It's been rock solid - looks like a
tele, sounds like a tele, plays like a tele.
The jack socket got loose after a great many gigs so all I've had to
do to it in 7 years is tighten up a nut.
But - find one you like. The U.S. ones are just as variable as the
Mexican ones so like all guitar purchases it's a matter of finding the
one for you. Mine is Alder/Rosewood - I find maple necks a little bit
too bright, but I love the feel of them - YMMV.
£280 all in is not bad at all, and even if they don't throw in a set
up tele's are easy-peasy to set up - all you need is a set of feeler
gauges and a capo.
