Turnkey closing down sale
Got this late yesterday evening from a certain Mr Hayward of this parish;
Apparently Turnkey in Charing Cross Road are having a final sell off of
everything in the shop today. It's not been announced anywhere so it
might be an opportunity for a bargain or six?
While I can't think of anything I need, I think I'll be taking a trip
down this morning to see if there are any good impulse buys. Anyone
fancy meeting up for some cheap GAS?
Cheers All,
Mike E.

My sources tell me that Sound Control has been split with some stores sold.
Salford, Leeds and a few others are going to one buyer (to be announced) and
will remain open for business.

Since when has that been any kind of logical argument?

I was speaking to the guys at the Birmingham PMT store, and I believe PMT
may be the buyer...

I hope not. Not good news at all.

Someone told me the other day who was taking over Sound Contol but his
name went in one ear and out the other. The guy has an exclusive
wholesalership on Premier drums, and having won that, realised he had
no outlets and thought "Um, better buy a retail chain then.."
I quite liked the enormous range of guitars at SC - even the acoustic
sector was pretty well represented, but the lack of virtually any
amplification apart from Marshall (in Bristol they carried a small
range of Fenders, Solano etc but really only two or three classics
whereas they had the entire range of Marshall in spades).
Would have been perfect but I can't stand Marshalls - except very old
ones!
Anyway, the guy has something like £25m to throw at it, which will
certainly buy the name but I'm not sure how much city centre
floorspace that buys, even outside London.

Strange, ISTR Nottingham having piles of Line 6 and Ampeg, more than
anything else. Mind you they had a decent PA department downstairs too.
Maybe the shop stock depended on the shop manager.

You're prolly right - the vast majority of electric guitarists in the
West Country don't go for tone - they go for headbanging volume.
I never got the Line 6 thing. Who needs everyone else's tone when you
can go for your own?

:-)
That's everywhere - I was at the Music Show today!

As I understand it, modelling amps allow the player to get the sound of
er... different amps. That's not necessarily in order to allow the
nailing of other people's sounds, but then again, what's wrong with that?

I want a Fender valve combo and an Ampeg, then I'll be happy ;-)

I prefer to do it from the other end where I can - get a guitar that
will do a whole range of sounds without having to touch the amp. That's
one of the reasons I love my Jag bass.
Maybe I should buy a Variax...

The Jaguar Bass seems to be catching on. I could love it more if it made
its mind up which period Jaguar it was based on - dot-marker unbound or
block-marker bound. As a firm traditionalist, "block-marker no binding"
turns me straight off (same as with Les Paul Studio models).
