Even if the guitar body was made of cardboard that's still a really
good price considering, you also get a book, strap and gig bag!
Probably the combination of CNC machines and under paid Chinese
labours working in unsafe conditions. These imports are then allowed
into our market to compete against, more expensive items made by much
fairer employers who spend money on their staff and their staffs
working conditions. Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot! The
more cheap goods we buy the harder it is for our manufactures to
compete so, the less they pay us therefore, we ending up having less
to spend so buy more cheap goods!
Conscience can be such a spoiler. But it's still hard to resist.

Out of stock according to the web page! I might be tempted - I could
do with an acoustic for emergencies (i.e. power cuts) ;-)

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach

Good point, but the battle was lost years ago. I used to boycot
products that were made in countries with poor HR records but it soon
became impossible as everything is made in China now!

That looks like a classical guitar. The tesco one I think is steel
stringed.

Try Amazon then.
They've got a Yamaha F310 with all the bits (strap, tuner, spare strings,
gig bag and etc) for £74.
Which means you're paying about £50 for the guitar.
There is absolutely no shortage of guitars of perfectly reasonable quality
on sale on the net in the UK for next to nothing.

It depends. If you were in the market for an acoustic guitar, you almost
certainly wouldn't buy one at tescos. However, if you just walked in and
saw it, noone here would be losing out as you wouldn't have got one
otherwise.

Not necessarily true. I watched a documentary some time ago about the new
Chinese economy and their factories are now second to none. Workers come
from all over China for jobs that are by Chinese standards very well paid.
It is the new breed of better paid Chinese worker that is helping drive
their economy.
There was also an article in one of the guitar mags some years ago that
mentioned the factory where Squier, and other brands, are made. I seem to
remember they commented on the excellent quality and quality control.
I'm sure there are still plenty of really poor factories out there but the
fact that most of the stuff we buy these days is made in China is no
accident.

But i also believe the workers are paid a pittance . And im pretty the
Chinese emphasize *the look* and not the quality , And we have seen
the results of this ethic in the recent Earthquake as many recently
built structures have simply crumbled to earth . A result of shoddy
engineering and design in favor of economy and looks .

The chinese are providing what is required. We are a society of look
rather than quality. Which do you think would sell more in tescos, a
shit guitar that looked great or a great guitar that looked shit?

I think you will find that in a long duration 7.9 shallow earthquake,
that has a tendancy of happening. Especially in poor areas.

Looks are almost certainly not an option in that area.
This is the result of a massive earthquake hitting a heavily polulated
poor area. An earthquake of that magnitude hitting the center of london
or birmingham would be devastating.

Well according to news reports monies allocated for the building of
schools and housing was skimmed off by local party officials and only
a trickle ended up going to pay for the buildings . Hence modern
building practices were compromised resulting in this tragedy
I'm not for one minute saying all the buildings would be still
standing after this tremor . But if they had stopped this corruption
and looked over the water to Japan maybe this death toll would be a
lot less .

That certainly isn't going to help

Maybe it would. It is hard reducing corruption in large countries (not
great in small ones, but I don't think a large one can fail to have
corruption).
Looking over the water would be hard though. Japan has been an
industrialised nation for a long time, and has a large economy for its
size, the people are many times richer ($33k/head compared to $5k/head)

That doesn't just happen in China - Italy is rather good at this sort
of thing too, I'm told.
God only knows what 'backhanders' occur - elsewhere and here in the UK
too.
China's just catching up.
Soon they'll be as bad as we are ;)

I remembar that - it was Guitar magazine, and the factory was in the
same province where all the Chinese breweries were - the Germans had
taught them how to make beer.

If it's anything like my Yamaha acoustic, go for it. Solid top,
nicely set up. I was playing it last night. I'd forgotten how nice
it sounded and how good it felt to play.

Yes , it was a neat little sideline . His books , not selling to good
and he needed quick cash . In a flash he decided to create a range of
Garden sheds . It came to a point were upon he had to choose between
sheds or books .
The rest is history .

Reminds me of back in the old hippy days when people had sit-ins, love-ins
etc.
Two book-lovers were having a conversation then and one asked the other, "Do
you like Dickens?"
- "Dunno - never been to one".
Boom-boom!
I'll get me kaftan....

Sure you don't mean one of those long sheep-skin coats, George?
Or is it better not to mention sheep to Welsh-based posters? :-)

That's OK, we'll keep the sheep if you promise to keep Gordon Brown.

The manufacturing company I work for has a few large customers who
also buy from China. Their guy visit the Chinise factorys and see
workers without safety kit e.g. masks to filter the fumes from hot
acid baths. They point out what the worker should be using. The
chinese factory buys the gear then, our customer goes back a month
later and the worker is still breathing in the acid fumes and the new
safety gear is locked in a cupboard. Yes conditions and pay have
improved in Chinese factories but they are nowhere near the safety
levels we in the UK have to meet.
Peolpe will always buy products that as great value for money and
Chinese imports are just that. The only way to make them change is to
slap import duties on goods from countries that, do not apply safe
working practices and fair pay deals. This would give more of a level
playing field for the western manufactures who are force to pay for
their staffs safety and well being.
