Does anyone know if Gibson ever made a Les Paul Deluxe with full-size humbuckers?
I can't remember seeing one. I've looked at the Tony Bacon book and on
t'internet and can see no sign of one.

That said, if they did make one, I guess that someone here would know ;O)

TIA,

A Les Paul Deluxe with full-size humbuckers would be a Les Paul Standard!

I've always been confused - and still am - about Gibson's Les Paul
nomenclature.
Fender's is much easier to follow with the Standard, Deluxe, etc. and these
are pretty intuitive for going up or down the price range.
However, I wouldn't know or remember the differences between a Les Paul
Standard, Studio, De Luxe or Special without looking them up each time.

Looks like a Chinese copy? Certainly there's never been a Deluxe with
full humbuckers that I'm aware of. Also, I've never seen the model
stamped on the back of the headstock like that. The serial no.
suggests it should have been manufactured in 2004.

Hence my original question although he or a previous owner could have
replaced the mini humbuckers.

Neither have I. That said, I don't think I've seen too many Deluxes up
close.

From 1970 to 1975, Gibson used a six-digit serial number. that would
certainly seem to rule it out as a 1973 Gibson.

They then moved to an 8 digit scheme in 1975 which they used until 1977.
However, over this period the first two digits were either 99, 00, or 06 so
the serial number in the picture doesn't match this either.

From 1975-1977, they moved to using used the eight digit serial number we
have today so I think that your right. By my reckoning, that serial number
would imply that the guitar came from the Nashville plant on Jan 13 2004.

Yet the seller claims to have had it for 15 years...

Actually I was wrong there. Starting with 00 as it does, it could have been
a 1976 model. The blue book does say that some were also stamped with
"Limited Edition". Still no mention of being stamped with "Les Paul Deluxe"
though.

Looking at the photos again, it appears to have Custom binding. IIRC,
the Deluxe had the same binding as Standards.

Also, the gap between the zeros in the serial are a bit worrying.

Another thing....That wine colour finish doesn't sit well with me for
a guitar of that age.

The only thing I can see that looks correct for a 1973 LP is the
volute on the back of the neck. A 73 LP would have almost definitely
featured that.

Still totally unconvinced this a genuine Gibbo though..

Actually - I may end up eating my words:

See http://www.joetheguitarman.com/1976%20LPC%20HS%20back%20CU.jpg

A geniune 1976 LP Custom that features the same style stamp on the
headstock.

I have seen some Les Paul Deluxes with "full-size" humbuckers. They were
factory special orders before the (re)introduction of the Les Paul Standard.

The guitar in question is, I am sure, genuine and has probably been routed
for "full-size" humbuckers at some time in its life, as many unfortunately
have. I say unfortunately as I believe that the Les Paul Deluxe does offer a
sound distinct from a Les Paul Standard, which is lost.

Either that item is being misdescribed or it has been modified.

There is no difference between the Les Paul Standard (when fitted with
h/bs) and the Les Paul Deluxe - except for the type of (humbucking)
pickups fitted.

There were several short-lived - and none-too-popular - variants of the
LP Custom in the mid-seventies, including one with chrome (not even
nickel!) plating and one with a maple fretboard.

In theory, but in reality...
They didn't make Standards at the time, so a Les Paul Deluxe factory
ordered from the factory with Humbuckers (of which there are some) would
indeed be a Les Paul Deluxe with Humbuckers...

You can't count a special factory order as an example of a non-existent
standard product line!

If the Fender Custom Shop produced a Stratocaster with a Telecaster body
(and they have done so), you wouldn't say "Some Strats have Tele bodies".

I would hazard a guess that the majority of Deluxes with Gibson (as
opposed to Epiphone) humbuckers have been retro-modded. If the owner
changed the truss rod cover as well as the pickups, the instrument would
be indistinguishable from a Standard of the same (or approximately the
same) vintage.

You seem to miss the point:

In the early 70's there was no such thing as a Les Paul Standard. The
rest I agree with BUT there was no such thing as a Les Paul Standard
until the later 70's I believe (excluding the late 50's ones)
Just Deluxes and they produced some with Humbuckers.
They were Deluxes with Humbuckers.
They also had little to do with earlier standards as they had pancake
bodies, 3 piece necks etc. So 70's standards were in fact deluxes with
humbuckers ;-)

This is it!

I own a Les Paul Deluxe 75 red cherry with pancake bodies, 3 pieces
neck with humbuckers, I was only wondering how much my guitar worth ?
I can send pics if any specialist would advise me
