If you were starting now...........
And you had about £500 to spend on one guitar, assuming you could play a
bit, but also needed to trade or sell you current guitar to afford the £500,
what would you buy?

Probably one of those Wilkinson Strat-types with the three soap-bar P90s.
And enough chnge out of £500 to get a multi-FX unit and volume pedal.

Always something secondhand.
A decent Stratocaster would be more versatile perhaps but I'd probably go
for a used Les Paul Studio.

I did this last summer for my daughter. After trying pretty much
everything in the shop under £500, she ended up with a prs se
singlecut. 8 months on she still loves it. Very nice to play (although
being a lefty I can't play it properly) and although it cant be
considered outstanding for any particular form of music it does very
nicely indeeed for a number of styles.

Either the best Tele that I could find for the money, or something with one
or two P90s, ideally LP Junior doublecut. Current fave guitar is a Squier
Tele Custom II with P90s, so maybe that's biased me a bit.

Absolutely without any doubt, I would buy a Yamaha Pacifica 412V (£200)
612V (£360) or 812V (£460). The new range are fantastic guitars.
The 412V is absolutely great, for £200 it has to be the best value
electric I have ever played by miles. A dream to play, a big array of
classic sounds, well made, nice hardware. And £300 left for a very
respectable amp.
