Keith & Chuck
There's been a lot of coverage this week of various awards in Germany
: First of all the Rolling Stones turning up for the Golden Camera
along with Martin Scorsese. What was really noticable was Keith
Richard's fingers - the joints seem extremely swollen, as though he's
got arthritis.

A couple of years ago I read an interview with him where he remarked
himself on this change, but he said that it did not impede his playing
at all.

Now that's what I *call* self-deprecation.

Doesn't he have his five-string guitars tuned to a barre-chord or something?

Cirka in his own words:

"Five strings, two hands, and one asshole,
what more do you need?"

I didn't get a chance to finish this as Her Maj wanted something doing
NOW..

Meanwhile, Chuck Berry got an award. Has he gone senile? He was
obviously very affected by it all, he clearly knew where he was by his
comments, but then he started rambling. It wasn't easy to understand
what he was rambling on about, as the translator's voice was overlaid
with the irritating effect of making it unintelligible in both
languages. I do wish they wouldn't do that. They could just subtitle
it, but with literacy standards at an all-time low, it would probably
get complaints.

Then he went over and sang "Johnny B. Goode", duckwalking rather
stiffly. I say sang. He mimed. I know he mimed, because they played
the original record, and they had Rudi Schenker & co playing behind
him. CB didn't even pick up a guitar. I know he's getting on a bit
(how old is he now?) but couldn't they have just played a bit of the
concert film "Hail, Hail, Rock n' Roll" instead of the embarrasing
spectacle they staged?

Eighty-one and a bit, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Berry

He's had arthritic finger joints, at least on his LH first finger for quite
a while. IIRC if you get inflamation reducing drugs early in the illness it
can postpone that degree of damage.

Re: Keith & Chuck
I saw Chuck twice, about 10 years ago and it was a great show,
four years later, age was maybe starting to catch up with him.
Forgetting words, guitar horribly out of tune etc. It could've
been an off night but I don't think so. First I thought it was sad,
but then I thought "I've SEEN Chuck Berry!". If he'd have died years ago
he'd be a legend like Elvis or Buddy.
I think Keef did a pretty good job with the "Hail, hail Rock n Roll"
thing to at least give him some sense of the respect due. (Even if
sometimes it didn't go exactly to plan)
