Debbie Cassells lives -even if her friends don't
Honestly, some of you people out there are so parochial. You might not have
heard of her but some of her MySpace friends are, er, to die for.
I mean, if it's your word against the likes of Sandy Denny, Jeff Buckley,
Nick Drake Nina Simone & Eva Cassidy then I know where my two penn'orth is
going.
Come on you lot - wake up & smell the embalming fluid.

You know, I'd feel slightly sorry for Debbie for us taking a poke at her
if she'd bothered to actually come and join this NG instead of doing a
multiple drive-by post. Her music might even be half reasonable. It
might even be on topic for this group, but sadly I've been put off
listening.

It's one thing to have confidence in the quality of what you do,
another entirely to think that others will believe the publicity.
Life is too short to go chasing around all the MySpace references (and
others) I am pointed to. There are too many superlatives used too
casually for them to mean much any more. If they want to grab my
attention, they're going to have to come up with something a bit more
imaginative and substantial.
There are an awful lot of singer-songwriters out there (you can move
the word "awful" two to the right if you wish) and most are just
rehashing the same old ideas. I need to know - without having to
expend too much effort - why this singer-songwriter is so better than
the others.
And if I hear the phrase "to die for", the cynicism meter is turned up
high straight away.

Well I did go and have a listen to see what we were collectively taking a
pop at - I lasted 55 seconds.
Sound-wise think Cara Dillon without the purity of tone and range of
expression, it's all a bit too earnest cocktail-lounge acoustic (oops,
second time this week I've used that cliche, think I need a new one).
The phrase 'drive-by posting', however, I like :)

Was it actually her, though ? Wasn't it just some fan ? Is it her fault
?
Okay, I haven't been paying close attention.

I think it was her agency, 'studio16a'.
Do keep up Richard, this stuff is vitally important you know, if we weren't
too busy getting over-aerated about inappropriate or multiple postings we
might actually find time to get out and do some playing & singing ourselves

Steve is right - I submitted this - as a friend and big fan of
Debbie's music - the authorship had nothing to do with Debbie -
I 'removed' the original post to correct a typo and unfortunately
the subject line appeared twice. (sob!)

The post appeared no less than *four* times, actually... which is why
it has attracted such comment.
Your problem is that you are using Googlegroups rather than a proper
newsreader; the latter would have made it rather more difficult for you
to mess up in that way.

Did you remove her MySpace page too? Looked and couldn't find it.
Typed her name into their searchbox and came up with:
Deb Soap Systems Protect-pure-lime
and another surnameless Debbie but she only has two friends and they
both look alive so that doesn't count.
I wanna talk to Sandy Denny, wahhhhh

I can't own up to inventing it. I think I stole it from common usage on
rec.arts.sf.compsition (rasfc) which is the other cool place I hang out.

We still get "personal spam". Only the other week this smartly
dressed man and his smartly dressed son knocked on our door and asked
me if I read the Bible ...

well, I had a thingie that connected to my TV and let me play ping pong
- does that count?
And of course there's the two kids - but they're now adult computer
nerds :-( And, oh yes, I think I read a book once ;^)
And there's this brown thing that hangs on the wall; the grandson keeps
making it go 'twang' - I can't remember how it works though - doesn't
seem to have a USB connection.

ah, there's the rub. If I tell you that it's an ancient balladeer clone
- quite pretty - tobacco sunburst - picked it up in Denmark Street
(Hanks) some twenty years ago, that tends to position me somewhere out
behind the coal shed ;^)
But it was just the job for taking to camp, it didn't sound too bad -
and which of the kids would have dared to tell me any different ;^)
Moving straight out of a warm hut to the campfire used to send it
straight out of tune, but Elixirs seemed to largely cure that. Anyhow,
the grandson fancies himself with it and that's half the battle ... I
keep telling him that Clapton and Knopfler aren't getting any younger
:-)
