Folkweave Trilogy on Canal Songs
Please does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Folkweave
trilogy on canals? Apart from my own personal interest in canals (WRG
etc.) I am also keen on folk music. I have over 50 cassettes of
Folkweave but not these 3. I can do a swop if necessary. Thanks -

On a similar subject, I am seeking the lyrics of a song that featured
on the BBC 1 North West series Ballad of the North West. This was in
the canals episode called Narras and Flats which was broadcast on 17th
July 1973.
The chorus to the song, which was about the Bridgewater Canal went
something like this:
'So away you coal boats, away across the moss
From Astley Green to Worsley you're the skipper and the boss".
I have never been able to pin this one down and would welcome any
pointers.
Cheers,

As the creator of the 'Songs of the Inland Waterways' web-site which
is linked to in a previous post, I too would be interested in the song
mentioned from the Ballads of the Northwest series. The aim of the
site is to collect together all (or as many as possible) songs about
the UK canal system. I remember enjoying the BOTNW series though I
remember little about it.
As far as the Folkweave trilogy goes, I would be happy to provide a CD
copy. I can be contacted via the e-mail address on my web-site
www.waterwaysongs.co.uk.

Great web site. It deserves to be archived. I would also be interested
in any authentic tuners from boatmen. Folks here may not know of Bill
Gibbons the canal boatman step/clog dancer fromBurscough on the Leeds
& Liverpool Canal. A short film of him is available from the EFDSS or
Garland Films. He also had a quadrille done in clogs at weddings. And
also he had a mummers play. It would be good to reference him on the
website. Chris B.

From a workshop at Reading Cloggies Festival a few years ago:
BILL GIBBON'S CANAL BOATMAN'S STEPS - (advanced - clogs).
Bill Gibbons worked for most of his life on the wide-boats on
the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Canal boat-people were always
renowned for their step dancing, and Bill developed his whilst
steering his boat and dancing in time to the beat of the
engine. MELANIE BARBER will be teaching Bill's style and steps
of this unique tradition. The workshop will only be suitable
for those who are comfortable with free-style step dancing and
is definitely not for beginners.

John Seymour in his 'Journey Through England' decribes the step
dancing in canalside pubs by the canal-boatmen. A tradition now long
gone. Chris B.
