You blatant self-publicist, you, Richard! Looks like a good line-up,
hope to get the chance to dance to you one day.

Excellent. I hope to be at that ceilidh, if I haven't worn myself out

I'd join in too if only I could find someone willing to push my piano along.

Let's face it, playing for ceilidhs is IMNSHO one of the very most fun
things you can do as a folk/trad musician. You get lots and lots of
actual playing time, unless you're the caller the stress levels and
performance anxiety is minimal / non-existent compared to concert
performances, and best of all you can see lots of people jumping up and
down and enjoying themselves as a direct consequence of what you're playing.
I still always look forward to ceilidh gigs despite the occasional
horrendous wedding reception experience. Hope it is/was a good one.

I was relieved to see our photo is no more confusing than anyone else's. I
should do a webpage for it, one of these days ...

Yes, I saw you were there. Sorry to miss you.
I'm kicking myself, mildly - I meant to get back up today, but blew it
completely. I blame the weather, but really it's just because I went & got
distracted instead of getting on a train.
There was a young trio there including a woman playing oboe. A good noise,
nice to hear it playing Tunes.

Thanks. It was a bit sparsely-attended and not hugely inclined to dance, but
v. pleasant, interspersed with sets from some visitors & some locals. Nice.
And, yes, I like playing ceilidhs. I'm not fussy, I also enjoy sessions,
concert gigs, whatever, but it is nice to see the tunes going out and making
themselves useful. Especially with a nice caller to be the user-friendly
interface. And people jumping up & down enjoying themselves is always good,
of course.
No horrendous weddings, yet, touch wood. Though we did a 70th birthday a
month or two back, when one of the leaping-around enjoying-themselves people
fell over in the middle of a step and had to be wheelchaired off the
dance-floor with a suspected broken hip; something of a damper on the
proceedings.
Before that, we had a very odd one. Booked by email, pwoplw we didn't know,
not sure how they found us; referred to it all as a Barn Dance, as happens
occasionally. It was, indeed, in a barn, complete with the occasional broken
bale of hay and the proverbial big wide-open door (and no heating. brrr),
and many very drunken Young Persons with fancy embroidered shirts &
stetsons, etc, making what looked like line-dance moves. Oh dear, a
Terminological Glitch Gig ... it went sort of okay, really. Everybody was a
bit baffled about what was supposed to happen (us and them, but we had the
PA), but they seemed to end up quite enjoying themselves.

That was Isambarde - they were really good all weekend a real asset to
the festival. Although attendance was on the low side the events were
all really fine and the weather allowed all the outside events to happen
in glorious sunshine keeping the torrential downpour until we were
inside for the main concert/ceilidh!

That's OK. I managed to take part in a couple of dances, although I'd
promised myself I wouldn't, after morris dancing all day. (Your music was
great!) I'd have stayed longer and talked to people, but the weather turned
foul and I had a long drive back to NW Cumbria on twisty potholed roads in
heavy rain, so I had to get going.

I saw them. They were brilliant! I've never heard an oboe played so fluidly
in a non-classical context. I was most impressed.
I took some photos - I'll put up a link once I've sorted through them.

I look forward to that!
We had Isambarde as the musical entertainment at a uk.rec.waterways
(+assorted mailing lists) GIG (=Great Internet Get-together) in 2006,
and I was deeply impressed by them then; I'd dearly love to hear them
play again now, to find out how they've come on in the interim. From
their giglist, though, they don't seem to come near the plush Sarf very
often :-(
I guess it's time I went to bed now, because I am having to restrain
myself from doing this sort of thing, because it has unfortunately
turned out to be a *man's song*. Bugger.
To Isambarde! Though Isambarde
be ringed and barred with doors of stone;
Though Isambarde be strong and hard
And cold as stone and bare as bone -
We go, we go, we go to drink,
To drink the beer, and fart a stink,
For cigarettes are burning now,
The ulcers roar, we hunt a whore;
But land of hoboes hears an oboe -
With roll of drum we come, we come!
We come, we come, with roll of drum,
The tunes to hear, and drink the beer!
Reprise: I guess it's time I went to bed now.

One of the local pubs used to have a poster (in the mens' loo) - a picture of
I. K. Brunel, captioned in large letters "Isambard". And in smaller letters
underneath, "Or can I have another drink ?"

Our mando player has something to do with them so I think they must be
based near here. Not managed to catch a gig myself yet though

I should have said: anyone with involvement in any club that might want
to book Isambarde could call me on 10484 606230 - but not between 15th
and 20th July as I'm running away to Ireland for 6 days to visit a
friend.

Most are connected in one way or t'other with the festival, but not all, so
you can ignore the alien dog-beasts, photos of Windermere and Laurel & Hardy
if you wish.
